The inclusive version

I’ve seen a lot of people comment that technically janeway and B’Elanna and Archer and etc etc should be in the purist category because they’re all bosses, but consider this: pretty much everyone in Star Trek is some kind of boss to someone and then I wouldn’t have anyone left in the neutral and very few people left in the radical so please just understand through the psychic bond we all have that I’m using purist as a stand in for world leader/cultural figure thank you I love you

Analysis of Star Trek fandom fanfictions

I decided to try to make an analysis of Star Trek fanfictions in AO3:

What is the AO3:

Archive of Our Own (AO3) is a nonprofit open source repository for fanfiction (fic) and other fanworks contributed by users. The site was created in 2008 by the Organization for Transformative Works and went into open beta in 2009. As of May 2020, Archive of Our Own hosted 6 million works[1] in over 40,000 fandoms.[2] The site has received positive reception for its curation, organization and design, mostly done by readers and writers of fanfiction.

- Star Trek Works Count by Fandoms:

- Number of fanfictions per word count:

- Fanfictions works by date:

- Ratings:

General Audiences (24751)

Teen And Up Audiences (24064)

Explicit (12225)

Mature (11077)

Not Rated (4426)

- Most popular Relationships on AO3 in number of fanfictions:

I tried to create a list of the most popular to least popular relationships on AO3 until it reached approximately 100, but it is difficult to find less popular fanficitons on AO3, so I may have forgotten some relationships in the middle.

oh my GOD

okay so. i’m going to get a star trek tattoo someday. i know i will.

and there’s a very simple and yet very complicated reason why. star trek is the BEST overarching premise for a show/movie/anything ever that i have ever seen.

and the reason why is this: Star Trek says “The universe is bigger than you. The universe is bigger than me. The universe is bigger than we could ever imagine, filled with more wonders and miracles and horrors than we could ever create. And only through acceptance and exploration will we ever come together. Only by CELEBRATING and ACKNOWLEDGING differences will we ever move forward. We are better as one, but not as a conglomerate mass, as distinct and individual peoples and cultures.”

star trek is one of the only universes i’ve ever seen where the characters don’t MATTER. there’s the next generation, which has captain picard, not captain kirk. there’s the alternate original series with chris pine and a totally different version of jim kirk, there’s deep space nine, there’s voyager, there’s star trek discovery, all with different characters and casts. that’s because star trek is an IDEA. it’s not a show, or a movie or even a universe. it’s not like marvel, where everything exists in the same universe, and there are movies and tv shows in that universe. star trek is a CONCEPT.

there’s a quote from an ao3 fic called babel by seperis that i really. just adore.

“Back then, United Earth had a sense of humor about itself. We'd finally figured out that homogeneity isn't an actual goal to be admired; we achieved union because we'd finally accepted being one people didn't mean we all had to be the same people. We were a people and also a thousand peoples, with a single language and a thousand languages, with the same goals and a million different ones.“

star trek says: this is what we could be. this is what we could achieve, by accepting others, by growing, by opening our arms and being the explorers we ARE, just by being humans.

it captures this feeling of HOPE so beautifully. this feeling of a brighter future. of a bigger universe. of a world that’s not so narrow and small, of a world bigger than social constructs, of a world bigger than things like gender and race and politics, of a universe filled with marvelously strange people and marvelously strange things.

star trek says over and over and over and over, we can do better. we can BE better. we can be BIGGER. bigger than ourselves. bigger than our cities. bigger than our SPECIES. bigger than our PLANET. we can be bigger.

star trek is an idea that says: the universe is bigger and stranger than we could ever imagine. the universe is infinite in its possibilities, and we could be a part of that, if only we came together, and accepted one another, and worked TOGETHER for a better future.

star trek says “look at what could exist. look at what we could do.”

I really enjoyed drawing these and I’ll draw more another day uwu. As always thank you for your ideas, you guys are the best! Hope you all like it ;)

Btw, if you want to “adopt” one of them, just tell me and it’s yours (give them a name and a story… all of that <3)

My favourite is the vulcan/klingon hybrid. I bet she’s super strong and disciplined (not all klingons are uncontrolled and violent for no reason) but very passionate and… kind of romantic.

I also have a problem with the cardassian/aenar one because aenars need cool weather, but cardassians need hot weather so ????

I know it’s done for TV reasons but I will never stop thinking about the logic fail of someone saying “X to Captain Y” and then somehow the Captain heard that whole message and who it’s from in real time despite the computer not knowing where to send the message until the end of the sentence.

The easiest possible solve to this is if they just moved the words around so you say “To Captain X” [Blip blip, Captain tap their communicator] “Ensign Y here, polarization is at 300 argonauts and rising” instead.

star trek is great because it is like…….FULLY ridiculous but you get in deep enough in the fiction and this completely ceases to be the case. so star trek will be like “these guys are elves but they live in space and their whole hat is that they refuse to express an emotion ever and they only do things based on the logic that applies in a situation UNLESS the logic requires emotional honesty. which ironically means they are the biggest drama queens in the galaxy because everybody can tell when they’re Feeling Stuff” and you’re like oh wow the pathos what a lonely way of life and star trek will be like. “this planet is full of aliens who inexplicably decided they all wanted to act like old-timey chicago gangsters and you go there and it’s just Like That because we thought it would be a fun episode” and you’re like YEAHHHHH bring out the tommy guns babe and star trek will be like “this lady is not a lady she’s a worm that gets in people’s heads and accumulates the personalities of all the prior hosts onto which she/he/they has parasitically latched and someday the body will die and the worm will move on and replace someone else” and you’re so deep in the fiction you’re like i LOVE this worm and i ONLY want good things for this worm and if this worm has to vacate the body they’ve taken over i will CRY SO VERY HARD IT’S NOT FAIR and you will be watching star trek and you’ll be like what if. what if the lil human dude got. what if he fell in love with the alien that’s like if an alligator got feelings and they got a little house together and cooked each other breakfast and he wore the alien’s sweaters but they’re a little too big and you’re SO deep in the fiction you’re like awww that would be so sweet what if the cyborg lady in the jumpsuit was gay? what if she was so extremely homosexual and she kissed kate mulgrew? and kate mulgrew wore a ring of keys on her belt like even though they’re in star trek and they don’t need keys? and what if everyone went back in time and wore silly community theater “historical” outfits in cheap velvet and took it so very seriously? what if in the future everyone wears jumpsuits for every single occasion and nobody ever complains about how annoying it is to take it off to pee? like everything about star trek is PATENTLY PREPOSTEROUS but you’ll be so deep in the fiction that you’re sitting there overwhelmed with emotion . insane energy that this show brings to the table . love it . love that

one thing i love about star trek is that the characters are very easy to recognize even when you're kind of face blind. the cast got more diverse in each show until there was only one white human man in ds9. and even in tos when it was a lot less diverse and there were guys that looked vaguely alike like mccoy and scotty i could still tell them apart because of their shirt colour. that being said im not looking forward to enterprise, they all look the same

i had an idea and it didn’t quite go as planned, to say the least

This is gold. Starts off great then sounds like the horns section just going crazy and playing whatever. Then it just ends on the last parts of the Voyager and DS9 themes. This is literally like what my last two brain cells do when I am trying to sleep

personally i think star trek should be more like doctor who. No Continuity At All. aww this character's dead? :( nvm theyre alive. no theyre not. yes they are. first contact happens every episode but noone ever remembers it. 26 alien species have invaded earth on a global scale but theyre surprised every time it happens
