Hoax was the greatest mystery of the album for me, as I couldn’t understand about who it was written, nor from which point of view. More than everything, I couldn’t understand why it was chosen to be the last song of the album, since it's so different from every other last song on her previous albums.
I don’t know if I’m right about this, but I realized something - this song is from her perspective, it just doesn’t have to be about another person - she could be singing about her music, her career, which has given her both pain and relief.
It’s the same metaphor in the music video of Cardigan, and a perfect way to end an album that was written as a way of dealing with the chaos of the world.
