if we think of the common extended metaphors used to describe love and sex—religion, violence, consumption—it’s apparent how we often weave these individual threads together when we talk about sharing a meal. it’s a sacred act, sitting down to break bread. there’s an intimacy in baring your hunger and indulging in front of someone else—only for them to witness and enjoy. there’s pleasure for both parties as both voyeurs and exhibitionists. and of course there’s a subtle violence to it all: stabbing and cutting food with utensils, tearing and crushing it with your teeth, consuming it; there’s a reason why eating with a lover is inherently erotic.
