Looking at Vilhelm Hammershøi’s Ida Reading a Letter, one begins to understand the oft-drawn comparison of Hammershøi to Vermeer.
Hammershøi’s deliberately (almost oppresively) warped perspective and his muted indistinctness seem very much to belie it.
However, the clear but dim white light, the precisely-placed highlights on the metal doorknobs, the hazy features of the subject, and even the composition—with the woman intently focused on her letter, divided from the viewer by a table—all reveal Vermeer’s influence.
