Ultimate and SSB4 are playing entirely different games in terms of character selection.

Smash Bros for Wii U/3DS played the game of surprise.

They got us with characters I'm sure many never saw coming. Characters that felt too recent to be included (Greninja and Corrin) characters that had little to no appearances on Nintendo systems (Cloud) and characters we never thought would be fighters cause of their non-threatening looks (Wii Fit, Duck Hunt, Villager) Smash 4 truly reminded us that just about anyone is capable of fighting.

And now Ultimate is playing the game of fan feedback.

Ridley, King K. Rool, Daisy, Dark Samus, Chrom, Simon Belmont and Castlevania series as a whole, all of this stuff as you probably know has been highly requested by different parts of the Smash fandom for literal decades now. And now they're finally here. (I didn't include Inkling cause while I'm sure she was highly requested we all knew Inklings would get in) Seems like this time they're not focused so much on giving us characters we never knew we needed and are finally giving the ones we've been wanting, well for the most part.

And I really hope many of you will start to appreciate Echo Fighters now too. It's a great way of getting more fighters in who, let's face it, are really really identical to existing fighters. Nintendo has a long history of making characters who look and play similar to other characters. So I think it's fine they play similar, at least they get their own animations and voice clips, making them truly feel like they're there and not some weird copy and pasting of the model directly onto the source character's animations. Just look at Olimar and Alph, or Bowser Jr. and the Koopalings, they move exactly the same, it feels off. Feels like the alts are just an empty shell worn by the original fighter.

And since Echo Fighters are a great and easy way of getting highly requested, but similar, characters into Smash. And now that we see 3rd Party Fighters can have Echo Fighters too...

I'm gonna throw it out there and say Shadow the Hedgehog is gonna be Sonic's Echo Fighter.

I've never been a fan of Shadow, or a believer that he had any sort of chance of getting in before. But he is, in my experience with things like Miiverse and online Nintendo fan sites, arguably the most requested character ever since Ridley. Some may argue that Shadow is completely different from Sonic, but I'm sorry, just look at SA2, Sonic Heroes, Sonic 06, Sonic Forces, etc. Time and time again the two's speed and strength are very equal and very similar, and that's not a bad thing. And with the role of Assist Trophy representing the Sonic series seemingly taken up by Knuckles with still no Shadow to be seen. I think they're making him into an Echo Fighter this time.

Has anyone else been highly requested for a long time to be in Smash? Maybe keep an eye out.

Every 3rd party character with their games they’ve brought to Switch.

Cloud (and the Final Fantasy series as a whole) is the only third party Smasher who hasn’t  contributed anything to the Nintendo Switch library.

Although this isn’t to say that Square Enix hasn’t been supportive of Switch, they’ve given us Dragon Quest 11, Dragon Quest Builders, Dragon Quest Builders 2, Dragon Quest Heroes 1 & 2, Lost Sphear, I Am Setsuna, Project Octopath Traveler, The World End With You, and more.

But it’s still weird to see Cloud here as he’s looked more to as a Playstation character than a Nintendo one. Here’s hoping to see something with him on the Switch one day.
