I still think about her; she who could’ve been the best thing to happen to the MCU and to Steve Roger’s story
Instead I got another Tony Stark film cause they wanted to make money
Word at the time was that they’d had an entire script either written or outlined that centered around the search for Bucky, with elements taken from the Madbomb plot. Then Marvel threw enough money at RDJ that he agreed to make the film, and suddenly they had the Civil War that the fanboys had been salivating for even though there had not been nearly enough time or character development to make the central conflict between Steve and Tony credible, nor was the central plot (Bush-era concerns about the PATRIOT Act) either current or relevant.
So they had to jam the Sokovia Accords (which were absurd - international treaties that complex take years to negotiate, with plenty of publicity, plus were a direct violation of the Equal Protection Clause in the United States) into the search for Bucky AND throw in Spider-Man because he was available. Everything that Winter Soldier had clearly been setting up (finding Bucky, healing Bucky, whether Bucky should be treated as a POW or a war criminal, Steve’s relationship with Sharon) was throw out or gutted, and the result was what we saw on screen.
Worse? Because Civil War wrecked so much of what had been set up in Winter Soldier, we got a Steve Rogers that was all but unrecognizable in Endgame. So not only did they miss the chance to show that you heal not by returning to the past but by moving on, they had the most political character in Marvel Comics literally time traveling to an idealized past to When America Was Great Again. The symbolism was horrendous, and it was a real betrayal not only of every bit of character development over the past six films, but of Jack Kirby’s hard work to show Steve Rogers adjusting to the modern world in the 1960′s, which he explicitly stated was based on his own struggles to reintegrate into civilian life after World War II.
They needed to have pushed civil war back to a point where there were more than 6 (atm???) supers total.
Like you had the antman, Steve and Bucky, Thor and Bruce… and Wanda. Oh no there’s so many supers! We need to control them!!!
someone left a comment on this post saying mcu should have waited to do this until they could bring in the x men/mutants and they’re right!!!!! except also agents of shield literally established a plotline where they had basically their own version of mutants and regular people were activating latent powers with no idea of it after an alien artifact fell into the waterways so technically there WERE a lot of supers!! they just couldn’t acknowledge it bc they decanonized the show 😭
The real problem with books-turned-movies isn’t “omg they didn’t include every single word in the book” it’s “omg they completely overlooked the main theme, threw out any significant allegories, took away all the emotional pull, an turned it into a boring action movie with a love triangle in it”
and that's a fact.
