If Fire Country’s “Get Some, Be Safe” was the episode that set up Gabriella and Bode’s relationship, then Fire Country’s “No Good Deed” cements why they’re perfect for each other. In its entirety, Fire Country Season 1, Episode 9 is all about second chances—the idea that survival means something bigger and better is yet ahead.

Sometimes, choices are meticulous and carefully executed; other times, they’re brash and straight from the heart. What happens in the midst of a flight or fight reaction? Who do you jump into an unpredictable body of water for? Why do you do it? What does being someone’s friend truly entail? The episode answers each of these questions by subtly showing us how profoundly Gabriella and Bode care about each other, though they don’t quite realize it.

Fire Country’s “Get Some, Be Safe” is an excellent hour for various reasons, but how it sets up Bode and Gabriella’s relationship is pretty close to perfect. It’s been a while since we watched a glorious friends-to-lovers blossom on our screens, and everything we’ve been getting with the two of them has been a pleasure to watch thus far.

There’s an understanding between the two of them that, first and foremost, stems from the detail that they’re innately kind. Both of them are people who are willing to meet others halfway even when that’s not the same treatment they receive.

Trust matters tremendously in love, and the two of them are not only building it through their phone calls, but they’re giving each other the space to be vulnerable. In many romances, phone calls establish an intimacy that’s difficult to come back from. It reminds me a lot of a similar scene in Pitch between Mike and Ginny because it gives them the comfort of knowing that someone on the other end is willing to listen to them, no matter what.

We rarely recommend a show in its first season without seeing the entire thing, but it’s hard not to praise CBS’ Fire Country. While procedurals are generally a hit or miss, for fans of NBC’s Chicago Fire, we might have uncovered the next best thing, full of so much heart that it’s been hard to imagine something as good for five weeks now.

There’s already an intriguing overarching storyline outside of the weekly cases, and that alone deserves viewers going in spoiler-free. And for the sake of allowing readers to experience the series as it should be, we’ll keep this list vague but packed with all the necessary beats we think are essential.
