Flaming Fairbanks Friday by Danial Via Flickr: Somewhere on The Milwaukee Road's Mineral Point mainline, Lonnie captured Fairbanks Morse H12-44 743 raising quite the ruckus. The engineer seems to be enjoying himself, showing off what kind of show the opposed piston locomotive can put on.

Bending The Iron by Danial Via Flickr: Between sun and snow squalls, Wisconsin & Southern conductor Josh, bends the iron at the Michels quarry in Waterloo, to pick up thirty one loads of ballast. The next day, WATCO removed the former Milwaukee Road chevron target from the Woodworth switch stand and replaced it with a tasteless generic target. WSOR L464 WAMX 4192 Waterloo, WI. Spring 2020

Two of Chicago’s passenger terminals, Chicago Union Station and Ogilvie Transporation Center (formerly the Chicago & North Western Terminal), are located near each other just west of the Chicago River and the Chicago Loop. Trains entering Chicago Union Station from the north pass under the line leading into Ogilvie/North Western Terminal a few blocks north in the Fulton River District between North Canal Street and North Clinton Street.

On March 19, 1975, Marty Bernard photographed a number of Milwaukee Road and Amtrak trains going to and from Chicago Union Station, with C&NW commuter trains passing overhead in several of the photos.

In the background is the North American Cold Storage building, now converted into the Fulton House condominium building (with added windows), and the Producers Warehouse/Cassidy Tire building, which still stands today but is slated to be replaced by a new high-rise residential building in 2020.

Note the two upright bridges over the North Branch of the Chicago River in the background:

The North American Cold Storage building with the huge Old Forester bourbon advertisement is now a residential building known as the Fulton House.

The Producers Warehouse Co building at left is now the Cassidy Tire building. The surrounding open space is now completely developed. UPDATE: Just today (November 27, 2019), an article was posted regarding plans to replace the Cassidy Tire building with another high-rise residential building. Get your photos while you can.

Milwaukee Road

“A senior in high school with a driver's license, the parents' car (and permission of course), and a brand new Pentax Spotmatic single lens reflex camera, and what looks like a soft Spring evening: what could go wrong? Milwaukee Road's overnight Chicago-to-Minneapolis Pioneer Limited poses on its first stop, 17 miles out of Chicago Union Station. I must have had a tripod, and I'm sure a lot of guesswork was involved. I was working at a camera store so possibly I had some expert advice too!”

Eastbound Hi by Danial Via Flickr: “The autumn clouds are thick once again, as the 1947, Milwaukee Road built Cedar Rapids, brings up the marker on Amtrak's eastbound Empire Builder at Richwood. I never tire of seeing this Brook Stevens designed parlor car that has been beautifully restored by the Friends of the 261 group.”

Your Grandfathers ALCO by Danial Via Flickr: Caption: “Milwaukee Road Class A Atlantic, crossing over from the southbound main to the northbound main at Rondout Illinois in the early 1940’s. From the Butch Schwanke collection.”

The overpass in the background was the Mundelein Branch of the North Shore Line. Today this ROW is the North Shore Bike Path and there is a pedestrian/bicycle bridge that offers an excellent view of the many Metra, Amtrak, Canadian Pacific, and Wisconsin and Southern trains that pass through Rondout every day.
