Various views of the bascule railroad bridge over the South Branch of the Chicago River used by the Baltimore & Ohio Chicago Terminal (B&OCT) Railroad to reach B&O’s Grand Central Station in Chicago. These views are looking north from 12th Street (now Roosevelt Road).
This bridge was removed when the South Branch of the Chicago River was straightened between 12th Street and 16th Street. The project lasted from 1928 to 1930. Another bridge was build further south for access to Grand Central.
In the top photograph, the passenger ship has the following written on the side: “DAILY EXCURSIONS TO DRAINAGE CANAL. LEAVES CLARK ST. BRIDGE 10 A.M.” This refers to the canal used to reverse the flow of the Chicago River so that the water flows out of Lake Michigan, not into it.
