C&NW - North Avenue Yard by d.w.davidson Via Flickr: "Jim Buckley caught one-month old C&NW RDCs operating as a westbound Milwaukee Division suburban train passing Blackhawk Street, on July 9, 1950. As of this date, North Avenue Yard was located on the west side of the mains and it appears that Buckley might have climbed some equipment to gain a little elevation. C&NW bought two RDC-1s, Nos. 9933 and 9934, and one RDC-2, No. 9935, from the Budd Company and placed them in service on June 5, 1950. The three RDCs always operated together as a set and were used mostly in suburban service, but also occasionally to Milwaukee. The three RDCs were rendered surplus after the C&NW decided to re-equip its suburban service with push-pull, bi-level equipment and the three were traded to the Chesapeake & Ohio for three inter-city passenger coaches in 1957. Prior to the construction of the Northwest Expressway (Kennedy), the authorized speed for passenger trains through this area was 45 MPH, so the Budd cars are slightly blurred by the movement captured on Kodachrome 10 film.”
