“Pictures are relatively rare of CP Rail crossing former Milwaukee Road bobtail swing bridge Z-6A. Chicago Terminal recently and officially abandoned this stretch of the former Bloomingdale Line (originally the Chicago & Pacific) and the fate of this bridge is unknown as it falls into the Lincoln Yard development area. Perhaps it can be repurposed into a pedestrian bridge as part of the proposed 606 Trail extension.
All of the buildings in the background have been leveled.
From the March 2003 issue of Railroad Model Craftsman magazine. I highly recommend seeking out this issue for details on this bridge and the one connecting to Goose Island:
‘Built in 1898-99, the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul’s (the Milwaukee Road) bobtail steel plate girder swing bridge on the North Branch of the Chicago River spans 175’-2". It is unusual because it is a counterbalanced plate girder with an off-center pivot. According to Railway Age for February 16, 1900, this may be the longest bridge of its type ever built.’”
