From the Chicago Tribune Vintage Tribune Instagram account:

“Pete Finn, North Western railroad brakeman, swings his lantern in dense fog to signal a train crew along Illinois Street east of St. Clair, February 1955. Photo by William Yates”

These tracks were part of the Chicago & North Western Navy Pier line:

Slingshot by Moffat Road on Flickr.

Caption: "Emerging from a cold winter fog is a southbound Illinois Central Gulf 'slingshot' piggyback train led by Gulf, Mobile and Ohio GP35 No. 637. The train is rattling over the diamonds past BN Target tower (ground level shack) that protected ICG’s former GM&O Chicago to St. Louis main line with NS’s (N&W) Peoria line and Conrail's Pekin branch in March 1984. This location is near the old Bloomington Union Depot in Bloomington, Illinois."

Caption from The Trolley Dodger blog: “In 1957, CTA PCC 7271 and 7215 pass on Clark Street, just north of North Avenue. The old Plaza Hotel, located at 59 W. North Avenue, is in the background. A Hasty Tasty restaurant was located in the building, with a Pixley and Ehler’s across the street. These were ‘greasy spoon’ chains that were known for offering cheap eats. Local mobsters were known to hang out at the Plaza. The Chicago Historical Society, now known as the Chicago History Museum, would be just to the left, out of view in this picture. The Moody Bible Institute would be out of view on the right.”
