Caption: “This is an extremely rare photo of this beautiful Alco PA #852 dressed in the Erie Railroad. The PA was built in April of 1949 and was painted in two different paint styles. The one here is in its second paint style. This photo was taken in March of 1960.”

This locomotive was built in September 1949 as Erie PA1 856 (c/n 77104), one of 12 Erie PA1's numbered 850-861. They retained the Erie road numbers when they became Erie Lackawanna locomotives (class PA-20 on the EL), and at the time of this photo, the PA1's had been re-geared for freight service. All were traded to EMD for new power during 1969.”
Caption: “Railroads operated less-than carload (LCL) freight terminals in major cities. Erie’s 14th Street freight house in Chicago, for example, loaded regularly scheduled cars to 41 destinations and received cars from 32 other freight stations in the 1930s.”

Built in June 1949 (c/n 76779) it retained its Erie road number after the Erie Lackawanna merger (October 17, 1960) and was classed MSA-10. It was equipped for MU operation. That's a nice freshly painted N&W boxcar behind, for the record, it's NW 219245."

Erie Lackawanna 522 at Hammond, IN on March 31, 1964 by Marty Bernard Via Flickr: 522 is an Alco S2. The other unit is an EMD F3A.
Caption: "I'm inside the EJ&E tower at Griffith Ind 1975 with westbound SDP-45's. I went back there in 1982 inside the same tower. The Erie has shut down forever - rusted rails and weeds. The old C&O rails are long gone as my friend Steve Smedley walks the old line to nowhere." Photos by Mark Llanuza
Caption: "Erie Lackawanna used a number of rare and interesting units in freight and transfer service in the Chicago area. This transfer freight preparing to depart EL's 51st Street Yard is led by regal Alco PA1 856, an EMD F3B (both in Erie Railroad colours) and an F7A. They will take the interchange cars from here and head for EL's Hammond Yard, just east of 'SL' Interlocking Tower in Hammond, IN. There, more cars will be added and new power will be traded for this classic lineup. Date and photographer not known, James E. Humbert collection."
