Railroads, Chicago-style

Mainly vintage Chicagoland railroad photos by others, with occasional contemporary photos by me.

"It looks like EMD was trying to interest the Chicago Great Western in the new SD45 model, so they let the CGW take it for a test drive. Not as unlikely as it may seem, because the ‘Chicago Great Weedy’ kept a fairly decent mainline; with about ten SD40's in their stable already, maybe the more powerful SD45 would fit in while adding more muscle to haul the massive long freights. I believe the Soo Line got to sample this demonstrator set next. No clue about the presence of this demo set and whoever drove us around just thought of visiting the facility just east of Austin Avenue on the west side along the B&OCT. Surprise!”

This once rural location known as Gretna is now suburban Carol Stream, Illinois, and the Chicago Great Western right-of-way is the Great Western Trail bicycle/pedestrian path.
