Nose of a classic by Mike Danneman Via Flickr: “Still displaying its Texas Zephyr lettering, Colorado & Southern EMD E5 No. 9952-A powers a passenger special at the Illinois Railroad Museum at Union, Illinois, in September 1984. In more recent times, the classy locomotive has been restored to its original Chicago, Burlington & Quincy number of 9911-A and wears black nose stripes. I’m sure glad one of these was saved!”

CB&Q E8A 9936 by Marty Bernard Via Flickr: BN 9936 with Train 1, the Denver Zephyr, taken from Chicago's Roosevelt Road Viaduct on March 30, 1971. The second unit is E7A BN 9920, ex-CB&Q 9935B with stainless steel sides as some E7s had. Note, BN smartly didn't try to paint the stainless steel green and white!

“CB&Q's eastbound California Zephyr behind E8, E7, E8 (9943B….) arrives at the station, while E9 (9991) awaits departure on the right  (with E8 9944B) with the westbound North Coast Limited. The NCL is Northern Pacific's flagship train from St. Paul to Seattle, but the Q handled it from Chicago to the Twin Cities. Often the NCL was combined with the Great Northern's Empire Builder as well as the Q's own Afternoon Zephyr, making a long and colorful train into and out of Chicago. This being the beginning of the Summer travel season, there was evidently enough passengers to justify - or necessitate - running the trains separately.”

“Burlington Zephyr postcard - this is the original 9900, later named the Pioneer Zephyr; it was the only one with the curved brow in the front window line, on the later Zephyrs the top window line was flat. Noting the viewing platform at left and the ramps laid across the tracks, it looks like it’s somewhere on one of its early (1934) exposition tours prior to entering regular service. The Pioneer Zephyr is on display today at Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry.”

This is the California Zephyr just minutes into its run to California on the cold day after Christmas in 1967.“

The Zephyr was combined Trains 35 and 11, the Kansas City Zephyr and the Nebraska Zephyr, with an E7 up front and one of the two Nebraska Zephyr obs cars as the finishing touch. Both trains were westbound. The Zephyr had a station stop in Mendota at 12:22 p.m.”
