“MILW F-units (63A....) lead eastbound freight up the ‘dump track’ from the mainlline at Tower A-20 to the C&NW ‘New LIne’ Sub (in foreground) at ‘Shermer’...I guess that says it all. I didn't find out until about 50 years after taking this pic that the connection between the Milwaukee Road at A-20 and the C&NW at Shermer was known as the ‘Dump Track’."

WICT 901 on the Dump with SOO 6044 (train 571) by Steve Zahn Via Flickr: “On most Sunday afternoons in the early 90s, the 'Wicket's' (Wisconsin & Calumet) turn from Clearing Yard to Janesville could be seen working its way north on the ex-Milwaukee Road North line. The Wicket's motive power was always a treat, as you can see here. Sunday, August 8, 1992 was no different than any other Sunday, except on this date, things got a little tense on the Milwaukee North line due to a downed power line on the tracks between Northbrook and Deerfield. The CP dispatcher needed to single-track his trains around the mess, and he instructed the Wicket to reverse at A20 and back his train onto 'the dump', which is the connection with the CNW New Line. This series of shots depicts this never-to-happen-again occurrence. And by the way, while all this was unfolding, there was plenty of activity overhead with Navy jets landing at nearby Glenview Naval Air Station, which closed in 1995.”

Caption: “Milwaukee Road westbound commuter passes Tower A-20 (from which picture is taken) behind FP7 (105C). The ‘dump track’ that carries MILW freights to and from their trackage rights on the C&NW (using that through truss bridge in the background) is beyond the section house. It’s really two tracks, and trains usually ran left-handed on it so that when they got to ‘Shermer’, the junction under Shermer Road where the dump tracks tied into the North Western, they could ease into C&NW’s lefty operation. Most trains could fit between Techny Road (the crossing with the car on it) and Shermer, to stay out of the way of C&NW freights and Milwaukee Road’s traffic as well.”

Caption: "Coming up the connection from home rails, Milwaukee Road F-units (63A….) on an eastbound freight come up the 'dump track' connecting the MILW mainline at Tower A-20 with trackage rights on the C&NW at 'Shermer'. That's the C&NW 'New Line' Subdivision in the foreground, which really wasn't new but it was the freight line, connecting Proviso Yard in the west suburbs of Chicago with St Francis Tower on the south side of Milwaukee. It was new compared to the original Chicago-Milwaukee 'Old Line' Sub! This freight will use the New Line as far as 'Bryn Mawr' where it will depart for Tower B17, a connection with the line from Iowa, and entrance to Bensenville Yard."

Milwaukee Road Hiawatha headed from Chicago to Milwaukee at Techny (Northbrook), Illinois. The passenger depot on the right is long gone, but the former C&NW bridge seen in the background is still in use by the Union Pacific.

Top: Milwaukee Road passenger train headed toward Chicago at Techny (Northbrook), Illinois. The locomotive is an Erie-built model built by Fairbanks-Morse in the late 1940s, complete with chrome on the front. On the left is the passenger station platform, and on the right in the background is Tower A-20, which controlled trains through this junction until ~1980.

Bottom: Today, Techny is still an important railroad junction through which pass Amtrak, Metra, Canadian Pacific, and Wisconsin and Southern trains. But no passenger trains stop here as they did in the Milwaukee Road era.
