Needle-watch poll

So, I got some vaccinations the other day, and the pharmacy tech seemed unnerved that I opted to watch him insert the needle. And he is not the first to comment on it. I'm willing to accept I'm an outlier and shouldn't be counted, I'm just curious how much of an outlier.

He verbally told me it was unnerving that I watched! He said that he couldn't watch. (He was very good at it btw!)

I worked as a phlebotomist throughout med school, and in my experience (100,000+ people poked with needles) most people look away (and most people want the needle-er to say when the needle is going in).

I am in no way scared of needles and have had countless students train on me, but I still look away myself. I can look, if I'm supervising the person with the needle, but I don't like it.

It's not weird when someone looks, though! It's just uncommon.

The only WRONG thing is when people don't tell their phlebotomist they've fainted before.

PLEASE tell your phlebotomist if you have fainted at earlier blood draws! It's called vasovagal syncope and it's not due to being a coward, just needing to get a grip, stop being such a baby etc. IT'S AN AUTONOMOUS PHYSIOLOGICAL REACTION that you have no control over, and fainting is a SERIOUS RISK to both you and the person drawing your blood!

TELL YOUR PHLEBOTOMIST/NURSE/DOCTOR IF YOU HAVE FAINTED BEFORE. We can take steps to prevent it, keep you comfortable and SAFE.
