Nippon Ichi Software has released Disgaea 4: A Promise Revisited for iOS via App Store and Android via Google Play for $32.99.

Disgaea 4: A Promise Revisited first launched for PS Vita on January 30, 2014. It was later ported to PlayStation 4 and Switch as Disgaea 4 Complete+ on October 31, 2019, and PC via Steam and Microsoft Store on September 10, 2020.

Story

Ahead of the Western release for DISGAEA RPG, Siliconera had the opportunity to interview Sohei Niikawa, President of NIS and creator of the series about the future of the mobile game globally. Additionally, Niikawa shared his favorite characters in it, as this entry features a plethora of characters from various entries. Users participate in turn-based battles to fight various foes and challenges that present themselves. Originally exclusive to Japanese audiences, the title is now available internationally.

Kazuma Hashimoto, Siliconera: Could you tell us which features of the series have been kept in DISGAEA RPG? What are the main features that you want to tell the players about?

Sohei Niikawa, NIS: Disgaea is a series of tactical RPGs that has already sold over 4.5 million copies. One of its characteristics is that it features incredibly high stats. For example, players can perform attacks that deal billions or even trillions of damage, or level their characters to level 9999. But the charm of the series lies in its rich character progression elements and deep engaging gameplay.

In DISGAEA RPG, we have strengthened the RPG elements, focusing on the fun of character progression. Combined with the convenience and accessibility of mobile games, players will be provided with a new gaming experience. The Netherworld is a place where anything can happen, please have a go at raising your very own omnipotent overlord!

Who is your favorite character that appeared in DISGAEA RPG?

Niikawa: Etna and Flonne, [the] heroines from the first title. In DISGAEA RPG, the players are the main characters striving to raise the most powerful overlord, Etna and Flonne act as assistants supporting the players. They are also major characters in the original story, that is why they have left a deep impression on me.

There are many other fascinating characters who feature in the game as well. DISGAEA RPG will feature unique customizable characters and original characters. In addition, all of the characters from the first title to the sixth title will be reunited together in-game, something that can only be experienced in DISGAEA RPG.

What influenced you to launch an international version of DISGAEA RPG? What kind of future do you envision for the global launch?

Niikawa: Disgaea is one of the most well-known game series made by Nippon Ichi Software, yet there are still many players around the world who have never played it. The gameplay mechanics, world, characters and storyline are all unique, original creations. I hope that the international version will give more players the chance to experience this series. The game is basically free-to-play, so no matter whether you are a loyal fan of the series or a new player, anyone can try it out!

Niikawa: We want to see how overseas players react when the game is released. If there are a lot of players who want the international version to feature unique elements or storylines, then we will consider adding them in. Please let us know your thoughts and expectations!

Will the international release of the game also see special Japanese holiday themed variants of characters? Or will they be exclusive to Japanese players?

Niikawa: The specific plans for when which characters will be made available have not yet been finalized, but we will be trying our best to put all of the characters who feature in the Japanese version into the international version. We hope you are looking forward to it!

DISGAEA RPG is immediately available on Android and iOS devices worldwide via Google Play and the App Store.

ForwardWorks has announced that an English version of Disgaea RPG will appear on mobile devices outside of Japan in Spring 2021. It is planning to hold a closed beta test in January 2021. The English official website is live and listed Hong Kong Bao Chuan as its publisher. Boltrend Games will handle the development of the English version of the game.

Disgaea RPG is essentially a Disgaea-based gacha game. The setting itself is straight from the series, with familiar elements such as a max level of 9999 and the ability to dish out over 999,999,999 damage. In addition to popular characters from the Disgaea series, the game introduced brand-new characters in Japan, like Dies, to go with its original story. The battles are turn-based with features such as cooperative attacks and Tower attacks. It also offers simple controls to play on smartphones.

When Disgaea RPG first launched in Japan, it had a rocky start and a relaunch after months of maintenance hell. However, after returning from the darkness in November 2019, it has been smooth sailing for the game.

Disgaea RPG is currently available in Japan for PCs via DMM, Apple iOS devices, and Android devices. The English version will launch in Spring 2021. The smartphone game by ForwardWorks, Disgaea RPG, got its 2.7.0 update that added new functions and an original character named ‘Dies.’ In addition to fixes and adjustments, the game has a number of campaigns going on to commemorate the latest version update. There’s also a new raid called “Visitor from the Underworld: Mao XENO” in which you fight the new boss Mao XENO.

The 2.7.0 update added a new function called the “Super Magic Ritual” that allows you to unlock the latent powers of a character. You unlock them by selecting a fixed latency type and clearing conditions in battle. The other new feature is the “Underworld Market” which is mostly a function to trade in summoned characters that are ★3 and above for Prinny Coins.

Dies

Dies (pronounced ‘Diēs’) is a completely original character who plays a key role in volume 2 of the main story. He joins as a ★4 character in the update and is available to recruit from the “Platinum Summon Re:born” banner. The gunner character specializes in using firearms with magic abilities used to land swift attacks.

Disgaea RPG features original episodes and more is available through the update with the addition of Volume 2 Chapter 2 of the main story. In Volume 1, the past main characters were accused of conspiracy which resulted in a war starting amongst them, and the fight continues to rage on.

There are five major campaigns going on to help players out. For example, the new character commemoration mission is one to help people level up new characters, like Dies. Most of these will be available through August 27, 2020 at 11:59 am JST.

As for the Mao XENO raid event, it is a new boss who resembles Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice protagonist Mao. In addition to being immune to status ailments, Mao XENO’s attack increases the lower his HP gets.

Disgaea RPG is currently available for iOS and Android devices in Japan. It will also release for PC via DMM Games in Japan in Summer 2020.

Mobile title Magatsu Warheit has just announced a Disgaea collab series. It will feature full story, and other features will be accompanying this collaboration; this includes voice acting, a full recreation of Laharl’s throne room, the inclusion of various Disgaea background music, and the appearance of Mid-Boss. Flonne, Etna, and Laharl will be added to the draw pool during this special collaboration event. [Thanks, Famitsu!]

This event will start on February 20, 2020 and includes a special story that Disgaea fans are sure to enjoy. This event comes in the form of a challenge tower style quest where Laharl can be fought at the top. As mentioned above various background music from the Disgaea series will be part of the event, the tracks are “ETNA Rock” and “Laharl’s Hymn”.

Special Disgaea collaboration items have been added to Magatsu Warheit as well. Six types of limited collaboration weapons from the Disgaea series will be available for players to collect. Using these weapons under special conditions will trigger a special cinematic featuring the associated character. A Prinny costume along with several other Disgaea themed cosmetics will be added to the mobile game as well for this event.

Magatsu Warheit is currently available for Android and iOS. The Magatsu Warheit x Disgaea cross collaboration event will begin February 20, 2020.

Back in July, Nippon Ichi Software and ForwardWorks announced that there would be a launch test version of Disgaea RPG on smartphones ahead of its official relaunch in November, and today details were revealed regarding the launch test. [Thanks, 4Gamer!]

The launch test is in order to test server stress so that the real launch will go smoothly, and is set to take place between 3pm JST on October 31, 2019 to 3pm JST on November 3, 2019. (That’s 11pm PT on October 30, 2019 to 11pm PT on October 2, 2019).
