A Guide to My Supernatural Fics and Series

I thought I could put together links to my fics in case anyone is interested. I also have a superwholock fic in progress, but I’ll center this purely on the SPN fandom.

Status: in progress (accepting prompts!)

Description: This is a series of destiel adventures, featuring Sam Winchester as the best Third Wheel ever! Most of the stories stand on their own, but perhaps some of them will be related...

  • Changes Are Taking the Pace I’m Going Through Summary: Cas and Dean grow closer until the line between friends and more than friends is indistinguishable. Or, 3 times Cas and Dean were platonic, 2 times they weren't, and 1 when Sam lost his shit. These are five snippets of how Destiel came to be~
  • I Put a Spell On You Summary: There are rumours that a witch in town is acting out, putting people under spells. No person got hurt, yet, and it seems that most of her magic serves to be merely inconvenient as opposed to harmful, but is it? Team Free Will investigates, although, as per usual, there are troubles. The witch puts a spell on Cas and Dean while singing Bicycle Race by Queen that causes them to act like a couple in love (though aren’t they already?) and Sam has to find a way to break the spell. But will Cas and Dean, after facing their desires in the bluntest of ways, want the spell to end?
  • Take It or Leaf It Summary: Cas is a florist. Dean is an angry customer-become-regular-become-head-over-heels. Flower puns follow. Go figure.A flower shop AU. The ‘fuck you’ bouquet tumblr post inspired.

As I said, the above is still in progress/incomplete, usually one-shots or multi chapter shorter pieces for fluffy destiel (of sorts). I am accepting prompts to write, so if anyone has something they’d like to see, hit me up!

Status: in progress

Description: This series details the love story of Cas and Dean, who met at Castiel's flower shop when Dean came in to request a 'fuck you' bouquet. It grew from there, and so did their love and adoration for one another.

This sprouted from a then-one-shot from the above series, and is currently my most popular fics/fic series that utilises flower puns!

  • Take It or Leaf It    Summary: Cas barely had time to look up over the bouquet of lavender roses he put there before a calloused hand slammed a couple bills on the counter and his eyes met a piercing, fuming, green look surrounded by exquisite freckles all around. “Quick, how do I say ‘fuck you’ in flower?” the man said, and Cas found himself at a loss for words momentarily before snapping back to present.
  • Tulips Together Summary: Cas and Dean wake up after their shared night together after Cas offered Dean a place to take a shower at, and it goes all domestic (and later hot). Dean cooks breakfast, Cas takes a cold shower, and Daphne and Velma are fluffy. Also, Kelly is smug, and very excited to finally see Cas stop pining and be in his boxers with Dean standing behind him and grinning madly.
  • You Made My Daisy Summary: Cas is busy working at the flower shop when a customer, a tall man in a suit, strolls in asking for a bouquet to express his loathing for a colleague, he offers him his and Dean's trademark 'fuck you' bouquet. Turns out, it is Sam Winchester, the younger brother of Cas' boyfriend Dean. Hilarity and sibling banter ensues.
  • You Can Poppy-n Anytime Summary: Cas and Dean finally give in and it's time to meet all the important people in their immediate lives. Charlie makes a gracious appearance, Kelly makes a buddy immediately, there's smut because Cas and Dean just have the rights, and later there is dinner with Mary Winchester, Sam and Bobby, so Cas gets to meet Dean's family properly. There's more flowers, flower puns, and more cute relationship stuff between the boys.
  • Last Bud Not Least! Summary: It is September 28th - Cas' birthday. The Sunday starts off slow as Cas goes to his flower shop to prep for the week ahead, and Dean and Kelly lose no time preparing a surprise birthday party for him. Jimmy, Cas' twin brother, his wife Amelia and daughter Claire join the planning too. There's cats, chocolate cake, decorating of said cake (Claire helps Dean), and so much fluff Cas could die seeing the people most important to him do such a gesture for him.

That’s it for now. This post will likely expand. Again, prompts are open and welcome for the Fluffy Destiel Series!

the fifth installment of my destiel flower shop AU Chapters: 1/? (likely 5) Summary: It is September 28th - Cas’ birthday. The Sunday starts off slow as Cas goes to his flower shop to prep for the week ahead, and Dean and Kelly lose no time preparing a surprise birthday party for him. Jimmy, Cas’ twin brother, his wife Amelia and daughter Claire join the planning too - last but(d) not least, they meet! There’s cats, chocolate cake, decorating of said cake (Claire helps Dean), and so much fluff Cas could die seeing the people most important to him do such a gesture for him.

“These look great, Kelly,” Dean said, petting Velma. Kelly smiled and started unpacking the balloons. But one vital thing was missing. “And where’s the cake?”
Kelly’s arms spasmed and yellow rose petals went flying everywhere. “WE FORGOT THE CAKE! Oh my God, what now?”
“Jesus, chill!” Dean tried to calm her down, but Kelly looked both terrified and disappointed in herself.
“I am a secretary to a city hall member,” she said, facepalming, “and I forgot a birthday cake! I keep track of dates and what not to forget and this happens? I am a terrible friend!”
What in the… Dean snapped out of his confusion and tried to console her. “Kelly, listen. Shit like that happens. You know what’s a good thing?”
“That we have balloons?”

also, yeah, hiatus. there's more info in the end note! @quicksilver-castiel friend, hello! just letting you know publically i'm not dead c: I saw your tag post and it's been haunting me, but hey! I didn't ignore you, I was just very busy with life, but I had time to read yo fic and damn, I love midam <3

If OTW weren’t around, this wouldn’t be “scaremongering”: It would be the inescapable status quo.

The people who believe this crap are the anti-vaxxers of fandom.

Oh god. They kind of are, aren’t they?

I’d go bigger and just say that they’re the conservatives/reactionaries of fandom–or, to frame it differently, this is how conservative and authoritarian ideologies express themselves in the context of Fandom.

my opinion on AO3 is that it’s an important asset but i still find it scummy that they’ll ask for money but when their users try to ask for money they slam them with their non-monetization rules. Like Anne Rice is dead and this isn’t the 90s anymore, people are making money from fandom please catch up with the times.

I think you’ve misunderstood:

AO3 was built by a bunch of us with our free donated labor for the purpose of being a space free from commercial spam.

It’s not a public service. It was built by us to house the type of fandom culture we liked.

People who want to do fandom differently, including making money, are welcome to go build their own site with their own money or their own donated labor.

AO3 does not forbid commercial links because they think fans making money from fanworks is immoral but them making money (to run the damn site) is fine.

AO3 forbids commercial links because they are making a very specific claim about the legality of fanworks, and that claim is about noncommercial fanworks.

They’re not saying that commercialized fanworks are against the law. They’re just not prepared to host them–nor defend them in court.

In case people missed it: The OTW will not honor DMCA takedown orders that are basically, “I own X work and that’s a fanfic of it, and that’s copyright infringement so make it go away.”

The OTW says, lolnope, we don’t think that’s copyright infringement. If you disagree, sue us.

The OTW says: Disney - we will not remove explicit Mandalorian fanfic. Rowling, Warner Bros - we will not remove trans Harry Potter fanfic. Gabaldon - we are not removing Outlander fanfic no matter how much you think it’s illegal or a personal violation. Yarbro, if someone puts “The Adventure of the Gentleman in Black” on AO3, you will need to actually take it to trial to (try to) get it removed; none of this C&D order followed by fans caving because they can’t afford a lawyer.

…So far, nobody has sued them. (This is, in my mind, the strongest proof we have that fanfic is not copyright infringement. In 13 years, not a single person or company has scrounged up a lawyer and filed a lawsuit against AO3/the OTW for hosting fanworks.)

But they’re not willing to put themselves on the line for commercial works. Those get considered differently in copyright law. They’re not always infringing - there’s a whole history of parody books & songs to prove that - but the OTW is not dealing with them.

The OTW does not care if fans are making money. The OTW cares if fans making money interfere with its legal defense of its archive.

If you are not a copyright lawyer, your opinion about the situation is not going to be considered.

Also, it wasn’t just Anne Rice coming after fandom in the 90s as though this is some relic holdover terror from ancient history.

Events like Strikethrough and Boldthrough happened in the early to mid-2000s. It felt like you’d wake up every day in 2007 and find another fandom group on LJ gone. (And not just fandom groups either, important community groups for education and trauma survival were also wiped out in those purges as well.)

And while not exactly the same, Yahoo Groups–and yes Yahoo Groups was a major online fandom hub at one point–were deleted as late as 2019 with very little warning, leaving a lot of older fandom groups scrambling to back up decades worth of content.

I might be projecting, but Fanfic.net seems to be wobbling too. It wouldn’t surprise me to find out they go under in the next few years despite performing similar purges of adult content in 2012 and allowing for obnoxious ads, which made the site unusable on mobile unless you wanted to see an ad what felt like every couple of paragraphs. (It might be better now, I haven’t checked in a while.)

It has only been in very recent memory that fandom has gained any sort of foothold that isn’t poised directly over a precarious faultline that could at any moment open up and swallow entire communities whole, and a huge part of that is the volunteers at Ao3 who decided to play chicken with the likes of Anne Rice and won.

Ao3 at its core was and is built by fandom. Some people don’t like it and that’s fine, but to even suggest that the volunteers are lounging around eating peeled grapes and lighting cigars with hundred dollar bills making bank through fraud while fanfic authors are left out in the cold is beyond the scope of laughable.

How Long Covid Exhausts the Body

Millions of people continue to suffer from exhaustion, cognitive problems and other long-lasting symptoms after a coronavirus infection. The exact causes of the illness, known as long Covid, are not known. But new research offers clues, describing the toll the illness takes on the body and why it can be so debilitating.

Diagnosing Long Covid

Patients with severe Covid may wind up in hospitals or on ventilators until their symptoms resolve. Damage to the body from severe Covid — pneumonia, low oxygen, inflammation — typically shows up on traditional diagnostic tests.

Long Covid is different: A chronic illness with a wide variety of symptoms, many of which are not explainable using conventional lab tests. Difficulties in detecting the illness have led some doctors to dismiss patients, or to misdiagnose their symptoms as psychosomatic. But researchers looking more deeply at long Covid patients have found visible dysfunction throughout the body.

Studies estimate that perhaps 10 to 30 percent of people infected with the coronavirus may develop long-term symptoms. It’s unclear why some people develop long Covid and others don’t, but four factors appear to increase the risk: high levels of viral RNA early during an infection, the presence of certain autoantibodies, the reactivation of Epstein-Barr virus and having Type 2 diabetes.

The Immune System

“Dang, why am I always so sick?”— Messiah Rodriguez, 17

Long Covid patients appear to have disrupted immune systems compared to post-Covid patients who fully recover. Many researchers believe chronic immune dysfunction after a coronavirus infection may set off a chain of symptoms throughout the body.

One possibility is that the body is still fighting remnants of the coronavirus. Researchers found that the virus spreads widely during an initial infection, and that viral genetic material can remain embedded in tissues — in the intestines, lymph nodes and elsewhere — for many months.

Figure: Coronavirus RNA is visible in different body tissues at 500x magnification. Daniel Chertow et al., preprint via Research Square

Ongoing studies are trying to determine if these viral reservoirs cause inflammation in surrounding tissues, which could lead to brain fog, gastrointestinal problems and other symptoms.

Figure: Coronavirus components persist in one patient’s small intestine, 92 days after the start of their Covid symptoms. Christian Gaebler et al., Nature

Researchers have also found evidence that Covid may trigger a lasting and damaging autoimmune response. Studies have found surprisingly high levels of autoantibodies, which mistakenly attack a patient’s own tissues, many months after an initial infection.

A third possibility is that the initial viral infection triggers chronic inflammation, possibly by reactivating other viruses in the patient’s body that are normally dormant. The reactivation of Epstein-Barr virus, which infects most people when they are young, might help predict whether a person will develop long Covid, one study found.

Inside the intricate world of the immune system, these explanations may coexist. And just as different long Covid patients may have different symptoms, they may also have different immune problems, too. Identifying the problems that are central to each patient’s illness will be critical for guiding treatment, said Dr. Akiko Iwasaki, an immunologist at Yale.

For instance, a patient with autoantibodies might benefit from immunosuppressive medication, while a patient with remnants of the Covid virus should receive antivirals, Dr. Iwasaki said. “Depending on what each person has, the treatment would be quite different.”

The Circulatory System

“Something as simple as climbing on a ladder all of a sudden became a mountain.”— Eddie Palacios, 50

Many long Covid patients struggle with physical activity long after their initial infection, and experience a relapse of symptoms if they exercise. Initial studies suggest that dysfunction in the circulatory system might impair the flow of oxygen to muscles and other tissues, limiting aerobic capacity and causing severe fatigue.

In one study, patients with long-lasting Covid symptoms had unexpected responses to riding a bike. Despite having apparently normal hearts and lungs, their muscles were only able to extract a portion of the normal amount of oxygen from small blood vessels as they pedaled, markedly reducing their exercise capacity.

One possible culprit: Chronic inflammation may damage nerve fibers that help control circulation, a condition called small fiber neuropathy. The damaged fibers, seen in skin biopsies, are associated with dysautonomia, a malfunction of automatic functions like heart rate, breathing and digestion that is very common in long Covid patients.

Figure: Chronic inflammation in long Covid patients may damage small nerve fibers. Peter Novak et al., Annals of Neurology

These findings demonstrate that people with long Covid are suffering systemic physical problems, rather than just being anxious or out of shape, said Dr. David M. Systrom, an exercise physiologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital who helped conduct the bike study.

“You can’t make up small fiber neuropathy by skin biopsy. That isn’t in somebody’s head,” Dr. Systrom said. “You can’t make up poor oxygen extraction to this degree. All of these are objective measures of disease.”

South African researchers found another circulation problem: Microscopic blood clots. Tiny clots that form during an initial Covid infection will typically break down naturally, but might persist in long Covid patients. These clots could block the tiny capillaries that carry oxygen to tissues throughout the body.

Figure: Platelets in the blood can become hyperactivated in Covid and long Covid patients, contributing to microclots. Etheresia Pretorius et al., Cardiovascular Diabetology

Inflammatory substances called cytokines, which are often elevated in long Covid patients, may injure the mitochondria that power the body’s cells, making them less able to use oxygen. Walls of blood vessels may also become inflamed, limiting the uptake of oxygen.

Whatever the cause, low oxygen levels may contribute to long Covid’s most common symptom, severe fatigue. Some long Covid patients meet the criteria for ME/CFS (also known as chronic fatigue syndrome), which often starts after a viral infection. Researchers have found that ME/CFS patients also suffer from a lack of oxygen triggered by circulatory problems. That puts enormous strain on the body’s metabolism and makes simple activities feel like strenuous exercise.

The Brain

“I approach a red light, my brain knows that it’s red, but it’s not reacting to the rest of my body to put my foot on the brake. Do you understand how terrifying that is?”— Samantha Lewis, 34

Even people with mild cases of Covid can experience sustained cognitive impairments, including reduced attention, memory and word-finding. Possible long-term neurological problems from Covid constitute “a major public health crisis,” according to Dr. Avindra Nath, the clinical director of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

Researchers found a wide range of dysfunction in the brains of long Covid patients. Although it is unclear how often the virus directly penetrates the brain, even mild infections appear to cause significant brain inflammation, according to the researchers, who included Dr. Nath, Dr. Iwasaki and Dr. Michelle Monje, a neurologist at Stanford.

Infections may trigger the over-activation of immune cells called microglia in a way that appears similar to the process that can contribute to cognitive problems in aging and some neurodegenerative diseases.

Figure: Microglia are activated in the brain of a Covid patient, contributing to brain inflammation. Anthony Fernández-Castañeda et al., preprint via bioRxiv. Photos: Myoung-Hwa Lee

Another research group found that long Covid may significantly reduce the amount of blood that reaches the brain, a finding that has was also seen in patients with a related chronic condition, ME/CFS, before the pandemic.

The Lungs

“I couldn’t breathe. It literally felt like someone was sitting on my chest.”— Angelica Baez, 23

Shortness of breath is a frequent symptom of long Covid. But common lung tests — including chest X-rays, CT scans and functional tests — often come back normal.

Using specialized M.R.I. scans, a team of British researchers found preliminary evidence of lung damage in a small group of long Covid patients who had never been hospitalized. Detailed scans of their lung function indicated that most of the patients took up oxygen less efficiently than healthy people did, even if the structure of their lungs appeared to be normal.

The researchers cautioned that a larger group of patients will be needed to confirm the findings. If the results hold up, possible explanations for the observed shortness of breath include microclots in lung tissues or a thickening of the blood-air barrier that regulates the uptake of oxygen in the lungs.

Living With Long Covid

“It’s really not something you can push through.”— Dr. Abigail Bosk

Many hospitals now offer post-Covid clinics or recovery programs, which bring together doctors with experience treating long Covid patients. Given the number of patients, some doctors and programs have long waits for appointments. It can help to plan ahead and try multiple options.

Start Unconditional Basic Incomes (UBI) throughout the EU

23/04/2022

If you’re not an EU citizen or can’t sign please pass the info to EVERYONE you know, so they can help spread it!

(That means reblogging this, not just liking it … )

If the EU manages to get this implemented, it could really improve quality of life for everyone not just those living in the EU.

If this get’s of the ground no western governemnt has an excuse to not at least try the UBI!

to be clear this isn’t some random change.org petition that doesn’t matter, this is the formal proper way for EU citizens to influence what the EU commission discusses. if this gets enough signatures they HAVE to seriously consider how to implement universal basic income across the european union.

Ugh. I can’t sign because of bloody fucking Brexit. Reblogging for any EU member followers I have who could sign though, because thi is excellent.

There are two timelines in my life:

Before Fanfic

B.F. was books, the library. Limited reading. No tags, no warnings. Lots of trial and error error error ... Nearly 1,000 books read. Always a struggle to find something good to read! Lots of disappointment and wishing iiiiiiihadbeenwarned.

&

After Discovery

A.D. ... I just wish every bookstore and library would learn from AO3 Tags. I want to KNOW what is in the book I'm about to read and invest time in. I WANT TO BE FOREWARNED of triggers and MCD tyvm!!! *but you'll spoil the twist!!* F U!!!!

Marvel, Agatha Christie, Star Wars, literally EVERY franchise and formulaic show proves, people want the option to know what they're getting! Buy a grab bag if you want a surprise. Shop a bookstore blindfolded!

I'm here to pick up my hyper-specific-trope-me-up dopamine hit!

Libraries are drug stores.

I want the warning labels!

Working in retail stories:

  • first day in had a grumpy old lady come in complain about soap, she wanted the pure white block of soap, we had it, she complained she couldnt tear open the package to see if it was pure white despite the package stating (and me reading it) that it is *white* and she had a problem with "snowflakes" only ever wanting liquid soap now, despite the wide selection of bars of soap in front of us; she left grumpy saying tesco has it cheaper, so she had gone
  • a young woman came in, asked me for makeup advice, and despite not knowing a lot just basics i did my best. Well. she was looking for a foundation in her skin tone, darker than mine, and was germaphobic, so she didnt wanna try the tester on herself. So i was the test rabbit. Customer service right? Oh well, it doesnt end there. It became apparent she was drunk, and she had to put on good but simple makeup to get one over on her ex, which, okay, but when her vodka breath and despair hit my nostrils that predicted shenanigans already. To be specific, she asked if she could try the foundation on my hand. Thinking she'd put on a smol dollop i agreed, that's how you usually test a tester, right?? Right??! No!!!! She put a LOT on MY FOREARM and SPREAD it like WALL PAINT all over my arm!!!! ALL OVER IT I COULDNT EVEN REACT i just went welp i hope we got micellar water in the back. We didnt. But we had acetone! Stonks. So anyway that shade wasnt correct, so we tried a second foundation and guess what SAME THING HAPPENED DESPITE ME TELLING HER IT'S BEST DONE ON THE BACK OF YOUR HAND OH MY GOD BOTH MY ARMS ARE COVERED IN FOUNDATION THAT DOESNT MATCH ME (i am whiter than snow white) ah shit and then she asked about eyebrow pencils,,,,, thankfully she didnt need to test that nor would i allow her to clown-ize me, so she took those, thanked me (gotta give her credit she was very nice) and bought that.
  • I hope she's doing okay now
  • I had two highschoolers come in and one of them, much taller than me, sheepishly approached me and said "excuse me, do you have vaselline?" And my brain did error.exe cuz listen, I'm new, i dont know where half the shit is but i pointed him in its general direction while his friend said " you see? You ask such dumbass fuckery bullshit not even the poor girl knows which side of your ass it came from"
  • I laughed
  • Also, to be honest, never EVER fear that the cashier judges you for buying anything, i swear to you i am too focused on the bar codes being scanned and your store card and how to return money if you pay in cash than the mini condoms you apparently think matter or so
  • More to come
