placeholder eohric in various states of obscenity and shininess

first pic, he's dressed to play a tag game, specifically on the orange team. his game vest is a fox pelt i drew with my eyes shut. while the game is a bit like tag rugby, with members of the opposing team trying to take the white flags off the game vest, there is an additional element where for every time you get tagged, you have to add a ribbon in the opposing team's colours (swapping out your own team colours). eventually you may be forced to change sides. this often leaves a tag game with very unbalanced teams of one or two skilled players against an army of less skilled, which is very fun. tag games can last several days and only end when one team has been depleted entirely. games can have more than two teams on the field at once, for extra chaos

middle pic i wanted to get a handle on his height - he's actually very short, i've been thinking of his pony half as perhaps 11hh, and in form similar to an A-division welsh pony. during his first excursion to ironwall, as a member of a bachelor band, he was almost immediately stopped by the military recruiters who had been dispatched specifically to sweep up young men and press them into service. this recruiter very sternly tells him that he must cover up when he is in Ironwall. he joined the army and didn't like it but he did get to be one of the drummers when they all went to war. i drew a human guy for the sake of the height comparison but in reality the people who would enforce dress codes & manage the young conscripts would be older centaurs.

last pic i remembered i had my marker brushes remember those. feels like it's been years. here he wears nothing and his tail is not yet back-combed into a fun little pom pom shape.

gay horse wrestling sequence

there would be a sixth pic where the loser finally lies down but by the time i got there i was so tired i was just so tired

social hierarchy is maintained without violence in most cases, and after the circling stage one of them backs off, knowing they'd lose a fight. but backing off means ceding your ground & movement path to the victor. it is a type of dyadic dominance so isn't relevant in contexts where two stallions aren't likely to ever meet again or associate with one another for more than a few minutes. a quick appraisal is usually enough to establish who walks freely and who moves out of the other person's way, but in the cases where neither party will back down, they're going to fight and make it everyone else's problem. there have been several documented cases of fights breaking out indoors and someone being knocked out by getting too carried away and smashing their head into the ceiling

it's extremely rare for this to result in life-threatening injuries but it does happen; a few deaths a year is the norm. sometimes a guy just doesn't know when to call it quits, or sometimes a stray kick hits the wrong place. the victor of a fight doesn't get a blanket dominant status - this is only in the context of the two participants of that particular fight

da doggy

i wanted the breed to read more like a jack russell on steroids than a wolfhound & make a dog look mean and potentially dangerous without leaning on wolfy or mastiffy traits. big dog bred for war. she was part of the dragon slaying team

you will have to zoom in for those maps. sorry

the six broad phocid biotypes and a size comparison. i lined them up by the point of their shoulder. any variation between these is possible as they are not separate species and can all interbreed

inland & coastal phocids' main distinguishing feature is their ability to walk easily on land. they have relatively long limbs and less bulky, cylindrical tails. they also tend to have smaller and subtler patterns of speckles and checkers. They can tackle a wide variety of environmental conditions, but struggle to live fully pelagic lives (though it IS possible) as they find swimming to be more of an energy drain than a pelagic phocid would, and they can't cruise fast enough to travel efficiently between underwater population centres, which are often very far apart due to the natural high speed cruise of pelagic phocids. fully inland "swamp" phocids are unable to swim in cold or deep water and rarely submerge to such an extent that they are not bearing at least some weight on their legs, as the inland swamps of the western continent are not very deep.

pelagics live a life entirely underwater, including giving birth underwater when the time comes. so their body shape is very streamlined, with short legs which are usually joined to the main body below the elbow/knee to reduce drag. their blubber layers are structural and form their little dorsal ridges. in cross-section their tails are actually very tall and narrow rather than uniformly cylindrical. their skin patterns are large and bold and quite variable, serving to break up their silhouettes in the water, confusing predators and prey alike. although outsiders would struggle to tell ribbon-patterned phocids apart, the pattern is unique per individual.

for a relative size chart compared to an unaltered human & other sirenians check out this chart

the most populous of these are the north mid pelagics and the spire coastals.
