Originally formed in the 1890's The 'Gophers' (Given for their penchant of emerging from beneath the ground to crush adversaries.)
One Lung Curran, Happy Jack Mulraney, Stumpy Malarkey and Goo Goo Knox, Owney 'Killer Madden (fourth from left); ran everything West of 9th Avenue all the way up into the Zero's and Teens, based around the Forty Duce and the Grand Central Terminal Train Yards; the Hudson Dusters were the main contenders for control of the West Side.
Owney Madden (born in the UK) got into bootlegging (after being released from Sing-Sing) and went on to become a Co-Owner of Harlem's Cotton Club in the 20's.
