Published in New York City from 1940 to 1947, the art and literature quarterly View magazine was edited by the artist and poet Charles Henri Ford and focused on contemporary avant-garde movements, especially the Surrealists. This March 1945 issue centered on Marcel Duchamp, who designed the cover. Contributors to the issue also included André Breton, James Thrall Soby, Gabrielle Buffet (wife of Francis Picabia), Man Ray, Meyer Schapiro, and Frederick J. Kiesler, who created a cut-out triptych of Duchamp’s 14th Street apartment that the magazine featured as an insert that month, all for a buck.
