The 4 Honda Siblings: Our Level 4, Season IV
Summary of Marin-focused parts from a documentary about the Honda siblings broadcasted on March 28th, 2018.
Marin, Miyu, Sara, and Taichi attended Hamada’s training camp in May 2017 in Colorado Springs. (5:15)
- Hamada after Marin continuously pops 3S: “Just get off the ice, get off the ice. Try it again tomorrow.” Marin continued to jump even after Hamada said to stop.
- Hamada: “We’re moving forward with [the idea that] every single day connects to the next. Just like with a marathon, I think that “I’ll run to the next telephone pole” can turn into running 42.195km. It’s not only the Olympics - if you always do what you must, what’s ahead will come into sight. Not losing to yourself and not losing to your weakness is what’s important.
- Marin: [The Olympics] have been my dream since I was little, so I want to do my best without changing that goal. I always have regrets when I don’t accomplish the goals I set myself, so I have a fighting spirit towards myself. I don’t want to lose to myself.
Marin’s meeting with Satomi Ito about her costumes for Olympic season. (14:12)
- Satomi said “This has a pretty sexy image” after Marin picked out which design she liked. Marin replied “I want to change my image from pink.”
Marin went to Colorado again (15:57)
- Marin focused on fixing her spin levels and worked with Janet, a spin specialist who has raised many gold medalists.
- She participated in the US Classic International, where she won her first senior competition.
- Afterwards, she went to Toronto to work with David Wilson on polishing her choreography.
Marin faced crushing failure on the GP series, placing 5th at both her events. (25:40)
- Marin: “This season’s big goal is to participate in the Olympics. As long as there’s even the slightest possibility, I can’t give up until the very end.
Marin’s siblings’ comments right before Japanese Nationals (27:08)
- Taichi: “Marin has come to Nationals as a contender to be an Olympic representative. We’ve accumulated practice together and improved our conditions, so all that’s left is for Marin is to do it. I want her to give it her all.”
- Miyu: “We want her to skate perfectly, but we can’t do anything besides support her. We’ll pray for her from now on, and we’ll always pray for our older sister’s happiness.”
- Sara: “It’s the preliminary competition for Pyeongchang, so I want her to do everything she’s capable of.”
Marin finished 7th at Nationals, and her childhood dream of participating in the Pyeongchang Olympics completely disappeared. (29:05)
- Marin, after her FS: “The skating life that I imagined is going to change with today. I can’t really think about skating right now, so… I want to think about it again [going forward].
- The Honda family spent the day in their home in Kyoto as usual.
- Marin was in charge of grilling the mochi, but she burned all of them.
- The atmosphere was a little different than usual. Nobody spoke of the Olympics. Even without talking, the siblings understood Marin’s feelings painfully well.
- The siblings went on their first shrine visit of the year together. Taichi drove them.
- Marin’s wish: “To find a new goal, and to move forward with confidence”
February 12, 3 days after the Pyeongchang Olympics started. Marin’s everyday life didn’t change, and she continued commuting to the rink at Kansai University every day. (33:05)
- Marin was even struggling with her double axel.
- She watched the ladies FS at the Olympic team event during her break.
- Marin: “I’ve always only [focused] on skating until now with the feeling of liking to skate. I always thought ‘It’ll work out somehow’ and it always went well. But in all, I now have a lot of things I’m worrying about and I can’t keep up with myself. I probably only had goals so I could hear them from myself, and I don’t understand my own feelings. It’s not that I’m frustrated I was unable to go to the Olympics. It’s painful because I don’t understand my own feelings. (after being asked what’s supporting her) I have nothing but my family. I might not be in a position for them to chase me right now, but I can’t lose to my younger sisters’ expectations, so I’ll do my best.”
Comments from Marin’s siblings (40:10)
- Taichi: “There’s no doubt that Marin worked harder than she ever has in her skating career during this time period, but she was naive and shallow. I think she was lacking in some areas. But after all, we watched Marin do her best, and the same goes for me and Miyu and Sara. We would see someone working hard and then work hard together, so we have an even deeper relationship than before. All the siblings will face skating with strong wills from now on.”
- Sara: “It was a little disappointing [for Marin] and I was a little frustrated too. But she’s 16, so she still has [the Olympics] in 4 years.”
- Miyu: “The skating life that we imagined as siblings has changed a little, but it makes me happy to think that there will be a day when the four of us can combine our strength together in these 4 years. A new, different skating path has started for us, so I want to do my best from now on.”
Marin participated in the Challenge Cup in the Netherlands at the end of February for her last competition of the season. (42:02)
- Marin: “The season ended in a flash. I have to stand firm and it’s a very important period of time. (when asked about 4 years later) My feelings of wanting to participate in the Olympics haven’t changed. Pyeongchang didn’t come true, but at the Beijing Olympics in 4 years, rather than just aiming to participate, I want to use these 4 years so that I can make it my goal to aim for something even higher. I’ve realized the importance of my family. I want to spend these next four years with strength.”
