Hello, this is Shoma Uno.

It’s late but Happy New Year. I hope to do my best this year, too.

I spent the year-end/beginning of the year period in Chicago and Toronto, a little bit differently from New Year’s Eve every year, which was very productive. I went to Chicago during last year’s off-season to train, and this time again it was quite hard. But to prevent a slump in the latter half of the season, I think I would like to face it in a different way from previous years. From these training sessions, I feel like I am facing a new season. I would like to treasure this first day of the new year the same way I will finish the remaining competitions and smile at the end.

I look forward to everyone’s support for this year as well.

10 years from now, of course, I want to do something skating-related. But, not really skating in the public’s eye. I don’t think I’ll be a pro skater at 37. I wonder if I really won’t be in ice shows… Right now, I don’t think I have the charm to be a pro skater. I really don’t know what I’ll be (lol).

Having said that, I’m not sure how I’ll help the next generation of skaters. If I become a coach, I want to reach the top together with my students. Like how Utako-sensei was to me. Could I be like that for my students? If so, I want to teach them all I can. Whatever position it’ll be, I want to be in a place where I can support skaters.

What will skating be like 10 years from now?

Can’t even imagine! Though, I hope it’s amazing. I hope 10 years from now skating will always make me think, “Ah, that’s really awesome!” Where will the men’s jumps go from here? I can’t tell; it could go just about anywhere. Whatever it is, just hope it keeps me thinking, “Ah, skating is so cool!” If I become a coach, could I produce such a generation of skaters? Please don’t have your hopes up. Since I have low expectations (lol).
