A pocket altar I finished today! It has a pendulum (with positive messages from my parents Inside it) and board, a pronoun pin , incense matches and a thing to burn them on, mini tarot cards I made, a fake tea light, moon water with salt in it, an agate ring, a dime to act as silver, quartz, rose quartz, purple aura quartz, citrine, and tigers eye.
Pocket Altar
I’m traveling for the new year so here’s the pocket altar I made.
Mini Altar/ Witch Kit
I know plenty of people have made these and this isn’t my original idea. but I made a mini altar/ witch kit for taking on the go and figured I’d share how I made mine in case others want to use it for inspiration.
The box I use is a small wooden treasure chest I got from the craft store and painted with acrylic paint. You can choose whatever type and size of box and decorate it how you want.
For the contents in mine I included
- 2 tea lights
- 2 bottle caps (to use as offering dishes or to hold herbs or whatever)
- A mini glass jar with a cork
- A few salt packets
- Some herbs in packets I made from straws (you can find tutorials on this)
- 2 black pieces of string
- 2 tooth picks
- A few small crystals- Hematite, Snowflake Obsidian, Amethyst, Rose Quartz, and a Quartz point.
- I also plan to add a small altar cloth but haven’t made it yet
Feel free to use this as inspiration for your own little witch kits or portable altars, and you can switch things out and customize it however you want.
My glasses case travel altar. I have lots empty glasses cases floating around my house thought I should put one to good use.
um a damn good idea? I have so many empty cases I don’t use I’m gonna start doing this!
Dorm-friendly offerings & altars
I don’t know about y'all, but I’m BIG on using candles and burning incense as offerings for my deities. I love asking them to help me pick out a candle or incense scent that they would like, and burning it in their honor. That’s my standard go-to when I’m at home. But when I move back on campus this fall, I’m going to have to get a bit more creative for the no-burning-things rule and so as not to alert my already suspicious roommate, lol. I thought I’d compile a list of ideas for dorm and roommate-friendly offerings and altars.
Obvs, this can be useful in any situation in which you can’t practice openly for whatever reason. PLEASE, feel free to add your own ideas & your own examples from your practice. I want this to be an interactive list!
Offerings
- Make them a drink (coffee and tea seem to be popular, but anything can work)
- Cut out a portion of your lunch to share with them
- Draw them (they’ll love it!)
- WAX WARMERS!! If you can have them. Closest alternative to a candle
- Oil diffusers
- Collect pretty things you find outside that remind you of them. Rocks, feathers, flowers, etc.
- Dedicate your work in their domain to them (ex. dedicating your study time to Odin)
- If you have kitchen access, bake things for them
Altars
- Pocket altars are always a good idea (check out the pocket altar and altoid altar tags for ideas)
- E-shrines
- If you can do it discreetly, you can set up your altar on a windowsill or in a corner of your desk.

It’s amazing what you can find at the thrift store ^^ All of this is either thrited, or stuff I already had on hand.

Cheapo Altar Tips
• There’s lots of free stuff outdoors. Acorns, cool rocks you find, pine cones, seashells, flowers, leaves, etc.
• Put a small jar or glass outside in the rain to collect water for your altar
• Put a small jar or glass of water outside during a full moon to make moon water for your altar
• A small dish of iodized salt for purification, cleansing, and to represent the earth element
• Print out artwork of a deity you honor, or a master you follow, or even just someone you love and respect (Mikao Usui, Amma, your grandma, the goddess Brigid, Jesus, etc)
• You can buy cheap candles at the dollar store. Choose a color and a scent that resonates with the theme of your altar. If it’s a seasonal altar, buy accordingly. If it’s a self-empowering altar, just choose whatever your favorite is. If it’s a healing altar, maybe white or green with a clean, fresh scent would be best. You choose!
• Old tablecloths, curtains, and scarves can be used as an altar covering
• Food items like apples, spices, nuts, candy, etc can be added for seasonal flare (i.e. in the fall, decorate with apples, tiny pumpkins, gourds, hazelnuts, cinnamon sticks, etc)
• Draw symbols, sigils, or runes of your choice on rocks you find, pieces of paper, or wood chips to add to your altar (again, choose symbols based on intent)
• Write down an affirmation, spell, or just a motivational message and tape it above your altar. Alternatively, you can fold it up and read it every time you visit your altar. It can help solidify the intent for your altar and empower you in the process :)
My Witch Kit
I’ve made a little witch kit, and it’s a lot easier than I thought it’d be
I just grabbed a little box that some jewelry my grandma got me came it (my hand for size ref)
Look at that!
First, I’ve got my herbs and stuff. I just bought these little guys from the dollar store and filled ‘em with herbs I found around the house
I’ve got a little tea light tin thingy for a makeshift bowl, some pennies,
a couple fake flowers for Persephone since I can’t get any real ones, a little bell that’s also for hades,
and a little locket I transformed into this mess. I really need to redo it but I’ve been a little lazy.
But that’s it! These are all things I either had around the house or bought cheap at the dollar store. I was keeping this inside a glasses case, but I decided to move it so I could fit a little more inside <3
Witchy Items for Your Altar
I share a very small room with my sister, and obviously don’t have much room for an altar. I use most of my space for my Hellenic shrines and altar. I keep my witchy stuff on my shared bedside table. Here is what I use, and how I store/display it. This is element based, but you can use it however you like.
North (Earth)
- Small Himalayan Rock Salt Lamp - This is a tool I use all the time. It detoxifies my room, and cleanses the space. I feel so much more at ease with it on, like it’s washing everything away!
- Crystals - You might want to move these or switch them out depending on what spell you’re doing, as all energy contributes to the working, but while you’re in your room, or even while you’re away, you can leave these here to represent Earth.
- Salt - Little packets of salt work, or you can place a bowl with some salt in it on your altar. I use my rock salt lamp.
- Dirt - A literal baby jar of dirt works, or you can put a plant on your altar if it’s by a window. I have a succulent!
- Earth Imagery - A mini globe would be pretty cool! Or even a little eraser or what not. Having an actual picture of the Earth would be amazing, especially if the clouds were visible, and maybe if it had the sun in the background. Then it could be all encompassing of the elements.
- Herbs, Flowers, Plants, etc - As with the crystals, you may want to change these out or put them away during spells, or switch them out. However, they would look really cool as you went with the seasons!
- Fossils - I think fossils are awesome Earth representations. They have been in the ground for a very long time! I used to have some really cool fossils I used to represent Earth on my altar.
- Tree Slice - Have you ever seen those little wooden slices that come from a tree stump? The ones that definitely had huge roots? Those would be perfect to represent Earth!
South (Fire)
- Birthday Candles/Tea Lights - You can colour code! These are great for short workings, or even to call the elements. To make these stand up, place them in a bit of clay and let it harden.
- Matches - Double whammy here- light your candles and have a representation!
- Ash - I used to have volcanic ash, which was perfect. It got spilled, but for the while that I had it, it was awesome. Collect ash from incense, a fire, etc, and use it (just wait for it to cool!!!)
- Charcoal - I always thought charcoal looked kinda witchy. I think a dish of it would make a good rep.
- Charred Wood - If you have a bonfire, or just so happen to light a piece of wood on fire, you could let it cool and use it for your altar.
- Lamp - If you have a secret altar, a little lamp could be an inconspicuous representation for fire, as it does produce light and heat.
- Lantern - You can buy super cute mini lanterns at the Dollar Store. I love them, but haven’t gotten one yet. I think they would be fun to use for Fire.
West (Water)
- Glass of Water - You can use whatever type of water you’d like; moon water, rose water, purified water, gem elixir; take your pick! Just make sure it doesn’t get moldy and stay moldy. Change it out each day/week.
- Sea Shells - You can get these in super small sizes! Or, you can get them big and bulky.
- Sea Glass - These little stone-like fragments are so pretty! They look just like crystals, and can be found on the beach or in the store!
- Sea Salt - Sea Salt could work to represent Water, especially if you pour it into a seashell or add in sea glass to it. It could be like a little potpourri of water related objects!
- Rain Cloud - You can create clouds out of things like stuffing for toys, cotton balls, and sometimes led lights. It could be a fun project, or you can buy one of them off of etsy.
- Mermaid Image - I have a mermaid book mark made of metal, and it sits with my other water-related objects. I feel like it adds that feel of majesty to my water representation.
- Drift Wood - This is so pretty! The pieces are smooth, have a fun shape, and definitely capture the essence of water!
- Sand - If you go to a beach, collect some sand, and place it somewhere on your altar! Be sure to put it in a bowl, though, because it is hard to clean up.
- Sea Weed - You can hang this somewhere, or put it directly on your altar. Either way, it looks great.
- Coral - If you find some coral, you can place it on your altar. It looks so neat!
- Starfishes/Sand Dollars/etc. - These are a little harder to find on the beach, but if you do, place them on your altar.
East (Air)
- Wind Chimes - These add a little decoration to your altar, as well as give you an air representaiton. You can even listen for the tinkling of bells to see if any fae are around!
- Bells - If you ring a bell, it disperses stagnant energy, and helps to cleanse a space. Having one on your altar is a great way to keep it fresh!
- Feathers - This is a pretty obvious one, an oldie but a goodie. If you have some feathers, you can use them, but make sure there are no laws against collecting them in your area. Alternatively, you can use fake ones from a craft store.
- Empty Glass or Bottle - Air is all around us. Use that to your advantage!
- Dandelion Puff - This is what I immediately think of when I picture the wind. You can collect some puffs and put them in a glass.
- Bird’s Nest (fake) - You can buy or make a fake bird’s nest. They look pretty real, and have this awesome rustic naturey vibe to them!
- Leaves - They were once high in the sky! Collect them during the fal season or after a storm.
- Incense - Another well-known one. You can burn this and use the smoke.
- Tornado Making Jar - You know those little jars that you can shake up, and they make a tornado? Those would be a fun water-air duo!
Other:
- Small Jewelry Box - This can store crystals, herbs, essential oils, etc. I use to use mine to cleanse my crystals becuase it played music!
- Multi Colour Light-Up Candle - I found mine at Five Below! It lights up in tons of different colours, but is pretty large. However, it takes up a lot less room than a bunch of different coloured candles.
- Your Wand - Having your wand on your altar makes it a sacred, special tool. It will be charged by the witchy items you have there, and will feel natural inn the environment.
- A Mini Besom or Real Besom (Broom) - I use a paintbrush as a mini besom, as I can’t have real one. However, it would be nice if I did, and I’d keep it near my altar!
- Your Grimoire/Spellbook/BOS/etc - If you aren’t hiding it, you could keep it on your altar!
- A Fire-Safe Dish or Cauldron - If you water scry, burn things, or just like to include your cauldron in your spells, you can keep it on your altar.
- Incense Tray - Incense can’t be burned without somewhere to place it. Keep your incense holder handy!
- Altar Cloth - This ties everything together! It can be switched out for sabbats/festivals/seasons/spells.
- Chalice - I’m not Wiccan, but I use the chalice in my workings every once in a while, usually for water-related magic. You can get these beautiful metal ones at antique stores, or regular old wine glasses at the dollar store!
- Mortar and Pestle - For practical use and an awesome vibe! You can keep this near your herbs.
- Coloured/Enchanted Salts - They display beautifully, and are really good to have on hand.
- Spirit Vessels - These can go in their own little corner if you like. They could also be the center of your altar, especially if you work mainly with spirits.
- Tarot/Other Cartomancy Cards - Find a nook for your cards to be kept safe and clean. They will be charged by the other objects all around it, which makes it an awesome idea to have on your altar.
- Scrying Mirror - Make this the main attraction, or perhaps just a piece of the puzzle. If you have an ornate mirror, it could be a very drawing part of your altar!
- Crystal Ball - Like the scrying mirror, it could be a background piece or the focal point.
- Runes - If you cast runes, you can keep your bag or box of them on or near your altar.
- Other Divination Tools - You cans store these, or just la them throughout your altar. Whatever you choose, having your tools close by will be awesome!
- Twig Shapes - You can make sigils out of twigs and hot glue! Add a ribbon or piece of twin in the shape of a loop, and you can hang them above your altar as decoration and as a little energy booster!
- Circle (Embroidery Hoop) - I know most people use salt to cast circles, but I actually use an embroidery hoop. I cast one around myself, and one around the items I am working with (ex: what’s in the hoop).
- Knife - If you use a ritual or practical knife in your workings, it’s good to have on hand. I can’t have one, but I like my wand better anyway, personally.
- Fae Garden - You’ll have to have plenty of sunlight near your altar for this one, but it will definitely be fun to have some Fae living on your altar!
- Spell Supplies - Random bits and bobs, like egshells and ribbons, can be kept on your altar as well.
I’ve been meaning to make some kind of portable altar for a while, figuring I’d just put together some kind of tiny kit for travel or something. Then I was like HEY WAIT, I COULD JUST DRAW ONE IN MY GRIMOIRE, and voila :D
This is really clever!
Say Hello to my quickly built travel altar for my vacation this week. Right now the only thing on the outside is a piece of sand paper, it will be decorated later, for now it needs to look inconspicuous around the fam. It’s main intent is safe travel and anti anxiety. I turned my pendulum board into a sticker that fits right in the lid so I have a div tool. Fits my pendulum, a piece of labradorite, a home made beeswax lavender candle, Himalayan pink salt with a splash of anti anxiety intent and lavender essential oil, cleansed sea salt, three sticks of violet and rose incense, lavender and lilac incense cone, strike anywhere matches, a make shift cork incense holder. I will be adding some lavender flower, the travel safety sigil made by @wolf-scent and an altar cloth. Anyone have other suggestions of tiny things I can cram in?
Lit the candles on my Venus turned Aphrodite altar tonight, and presented her some chocolate cake as an offering. 💖 Hubby is passed out from his meds, so it’s time to have some quiet girl talk hopefully with my Goddess 🌹👁🍃
I love this altar!💕🌸
Tiny water witch travel altar with
- Scallop Shell
- Light Blue Tea Candle
- Matches
- 2 Dark Blue Birthday Candles
- Salt
- Sand
- Glass “Pearl”
- Empy Tea Bag for a tiny sachet
A clearer photo of my pocket altar. I added some more to it and I am fairly confident that it’s finished. My pocket altar includes: - jar of protection salt - jar of dried lavender - jar of Flying Devil oil - tealight candle - white sage incense cone - matches wrapped in enough hemp twine for knot magic - match striker - clear quartz point - small piece of black tourmaline - sprig of wormwood - wooden yes/no coin - banishment talisman/sigil to banish negative spirits ward off black magic I am hoping I can get or make a little altar cloth to put in there too, which will double as a bit of padding for the contents so no damage comes to the little glass jars.
According to Cass: Mini Witch Kits & Travel Altars
WHAT ARE MINI WITCH KITS/TRAVEL ALTARS?
A mini witch kit or travel altar is exactly what it sounds like. It is a collection of small supplies put into a small container for the purpose of carrying them around, or easy hiding and storage.
WHAT DO YOU USE THEM FOR?
As a secret witch, I use it instead of a large altar to do spell work in. It’s easily hidden and most of the time I just carry it around with me to classes. Lots of witches choose to use a mini witch kit to go away with them on holiday, others may use a travel kit in a dorm if they don’t have much space. Some witches want something to carry around with them for on the go spellwork.
At this point, you’re probably asking well why not a big altar? The answers are as varied as the witches who use them. I like a mini kit to carry with me, Sam likes one so they don’t purchase as many things, Ripple keeps one because he’s in a dorm and has no space, and the answers are endless. Mini altars can be used for so many things, nearly everyone has a use for one even if it’s just a pad of paper and a pen.
WHAT DO YOU STORE THEM IN?
Mini doesn’t mean super tiny. I keep my altar in an Altoids tin, it’s packed but it serves my purpose. Other witches use shoe boxes which are a bit less conspicuous or decorative boxes, I’ve even seen picnic baskets as a mini altar! You aren’t limited to boxes though, you can keep them in a makeup pouch, or a jar, or even a spare pencil case.
WHAT DO YOU PUT IN ONE?
Honestly, the options are ENDLESS. I don’t like liquids because I’m scared they will spill but here’s a quick list. In your mini altar you can include: crystals, herbs, vials of things, mini spell bottles, powders(properly sealed of course), bells, feathers, sigils, tea lights/candles, birthday candles, tea bags, matches, mini besoms/brooms, sticks, paper, pens, pendulums, pendulum boards, mini ouija boards and planchette, coins, jewelry, pocket knife, scissors, salt, journals, essential oils, castanets, keys, mini wands, runes, small bones, ribbon, dice, mini tarot cards, thread, items to represent the elements, and items to represent your deities.
WHAT SHOULD YOU NOT INCLUDE?
Now we get to the fun part if you’re including things like bones, and feathers, and previously animal bits, please make sure you have obtained these legally. It is illegal in some areas to possess certain bones and certain feathers. Please make sure your herbs and organic materials are dried properly, they will rot and they will stink. On that note, please take care that light and heat sensitive items are stored properly (I’m looking at you, matches.) If you include a knife, be sure you are of proper age and are legally carrying it in your area.
WHAT IS IN YOURS?
In my lil’ altar I have:
- Some small pieces of paper - for sigils or paper crafting/origami magic
- White yarn - for knot magic
- Thread in a few colors - for color correspondences in knot magic, and tying to candles for color correspondences

- Salt - for cleansing (and salting fries)
- A jar of lavender buds
- A school productivity spell jar (tutorial coming soon)
- Candle - for candle magic

A good resource for secret witches!
My four, oh jeez, four “altar” spaces. I say altar with quotes cause I’m still not sure if it’s appropriate since I don’t personally worship any deities or work with spirits or fae, etc.
- The first is for peace, health and prosperity in the home and with fam, on the left there is an orange bag where we put change to help attract prosperity and good health to our home.
- The second is in devotion to the sciences, the never ending pursuit of knowledge and the natural world. (My fave tbh)
- The third is my most used for creativity and dreams. I change it with the wheel mostly. I light candles on it almost every night and it’s where my crystals live when they’re on display.
- The last is my boyfriend’s attempts to help me set up something seasonal which turned out mostly cute. We put offerings on it such as the pumpkin and my latest round of violet blossoms, we’ve changed out other veggies and greens as needed. (On the fridge behind is an amazing portrait of Jaime painted by my bestie 😂)
