fruit-in-jars 101 by stacynguyen
“What is jam? What makes something authentically jam? Can bacon really be made into jam?
It was all very Existentialist.
The answer to those questions is a bit complicated and non-definitive. The U.S. FDA has defined jam and jelly in very specific and mathematical terms (such-and-such percentage of juice to fruit to water to sugar = jam/jelly); it also uses jam and preserve interchangeably, for the most part. While interesting, the FDA’s definitions did not matter much to me because the FDA wasn’t really using the terms in the way that we usually use the terms. Also, the FDA wasn’t comprehensive in its definitions. It didn’t tackle other fruit spreads like marmalades or curds, for instance.
The more I looked into, the more I thought, dude, this information would make a good infographic.”
i feel like we don’t talk about things like this enough
How to tell a raven from a crow. Made with corvid researcher Dr. Kaeli Swift for her blog post on the subject!
These are all well and good (accurate and informative and also fun) but here’s the best way to tell the difference between the two:
Ravens are FUCKING huge.
If you want an easy way to remember which one is the big one, the bigger word’s the bigger bird–Ravens are big, crows are little.

Health and fitness comes in all shapes and sizes. Every single one of these athletes is a certified bad-ass.
I’ve posted this before but it’s worth reblogging!
Just a reminder - if you’re drawing a team superhero book and more than one of your characters has the same build YOU’RE DOING IT ALL WRONG
Always reblog
This is excellent.
It’s also important to note that often (though not always!) physique is associated with one’s strength. Bodybuilders have defined muscles. Weightlifters and wrestlers have bulk. Gymnasts and boxers are small but muscular. Volleyball and basketball players are tall and lean. Runners and bikers are skinny with muscular legs. Hockey players and skiiers have powerful core muscles and thighs. Those who do field sports (discus, shot-putting, etc) have powerful chests and arms.
Obviously, there are exceptions, but athletes often have physiques that match their area. Not everyone is good at the same thing, nor is everyone’s body necessarily built for the same thing. Humans come in a lot of different shapes, and that’s a good thing, because not every shape is ideal for every activity.
I see this is back and as awesome as ever.

How is it possible for an animal to resemble a bird, a mammal, and a reptile simultaneously?
Those ARE great ears.

As you might be aware I have big feelings about all besnouted creatures, but recently something has been grating on me. Sometimes, when people draw a snout animal, they draw the snout as a nose with the mouth as a separate entity underneath. This is a stylistic choice I greatly dislike because a snout or trunk is, by definition
A COMBINATION OF THE NOSE AND UPPER-LIP.
You can see here that the snout is not a separate entity from the mouth in these mammals, but is a fleshy protuberance emanating from the upper jaw.
You can see in this illustration how a more anatomically accurate snout position gives an anthropomorphic pig a degree of charm that an inaccurate snout position does not.
Snout positioning can make or break a character design for me.
Several scenes throughout the movie show evidence of this (see below). Historically, left-handed people have been viewed as unlucky or evil. At some point, Bruno likely became aware of this stigma and saw it as further proof that he was cursed. His speech patterns, particularly his occasional stuttering, are indications of an attempt to “correct” his handedness. It is speculated that forcing a left-handed person to be right-handed can cause stuttering, though the jury is still out on whether or not this is true. As a southpaw myself, I fully embrace the idea that Bruno is a lefty.
Bruno holding the trowel with his left hand.
Holding and flipping through the cut-out scenes with his left hand.
Bruno is using his left hand to support the bucket. Most people use their dominant hand to support objects such as buckets while pouring.
Striking a match with his left hand.
Here Bruno switches hands when lighting the other fires. This could indicate that he tried to correct his handedness earlier in life and so now uses his right hand frequently, or it could be that he simply switched for the sake of convenience during this scene.
Bruno charged toward his mother pointing with his left hand. Most gestures are made with the dominant hand, particularly emotional gestures.
It would also feel more natural for Bruno to reach for his sister with his dominant hand. Unless he’s shaking hands with someone, then he would likely rely on his left hand more for physical contact.
Once again using his left hand to support the bucket…
