MOVIES I’VE WATCHED IN 2022 ↳ 7. Anastasia (1997) ★★★★
It’s a perfect ending. No. It’s a perfect beginning.
ANASTASIA (1997)
Don Bluth only knew how to draw one man, but dammit he wasn’t gonna let that stop him.
To be fair, he knew how to draw two men
twinks and bears
I scream every time
Like. He is ready for this con to be OVER. He likes this girl but he was in it for the money and he knows that’s the one question he forgot to give her an answer to, because no one knows what he did that night.
The absolute wonder in his face as he realizes the girl he saved has been right in front of him; it’s no longer a con. The money isn’t even in his mind. He’s gone his whole life assuming she’s dead or long gone, that he failed.
But here she is, and in this moment he’s so shocked and awed, and it’s such a beautiful moment.

Anastasia wasn’t a Disney movie. Saying it is now, simply because Disney bought Fox, is creatively anachronistic. Don Bluth didn’t fight in the animation trenches and escape the clutches of The Mouse to have his work artistically misattributed. I’m not dying on this hill. I’m defending this hill. I’m killing on this hill.
Just started imagining a Necromancer using their magic to create undead for the sole purpose of creating a musical number and they need back up dancers for their song solo.
Ah yes, the necromancer subclass: necrodancer
multiclassing in bard
For context: animator and producer Don Bluth left Disney and released various movies, including Anastasia, through Fox, but Disney owns Fox now, so Disney now has rights to the movie.
For a long time and as many of you are aware of, I’ve been obsessed with the idea of a Don Bluth take on Strange Magic.
That’s not to say I don’t adore the animation we have! I just know that Don Bluth’s take would be the incredible blend of beautiful, suspiciously horny and fantastical that his films always are.
I’m going to make a master post of the whole crew once I finish with everyone, but I wanted to share what I had so far!
I got obsessed with Anastasia 1997 lately and I can’t stop singing those songs and smiling like an idiot when those lovey dovey moments come up.
Just some midnight randomness:
Stupid GIF, making my lovely HD pixely (so I added a still in good quality)! ;D
me watching anastasia (1997)
All the weird misinterpretations and revisions of Russian history aside, Anastasia is one of my favourite movies because its plot structure is so fucking weird
It’s a period piece romance. That’s cool, that’s all well and good, except that on the sidelines there’s an undead warlock who’s trying so hard to kill the protagonist, but all in ways that the protagonist either doesn’t notice or doesn’t accept as supernatural
And it isn’t a twist! The audience knows about the warlock! The warlock has a villain song! The warlock is one of the principal characters! But the protagonist spends 95% of the movie completely unaware of the warlock, and just spends the entirety of the movie doing period piece romance things while being repeatedly inconvenienced by the warlock until the climax, when the protagonist has to very suddenly
I have never seen a movie with a plot structure like this before, and I don’t think I’ll see one like it ever again. It’s like an adaptation of Pride and Prejudice that turns Lady Catherine into a vampire who’s just repeatedly trying to drink Lizzy’s blood, but Lizzy doesn’t even notice until the climax whereupon she stuffs Lady Catherine’s mouth with garlic and cuts off her head (an adaptation I would kill to see, by the way). There are two completely different genres playing out at the same time, and one of them is trying to kill the other
Anyways that’s why the stage musical is bad, thank you and good night
I have made 8 of these so I guess it´s now officially a series. :D
CHARACTERS: Marina, Mata, Ariel, Jane, Amelia, Beauty, Megara, Anastasia

“I could teach you the latest dance steps. It starts with like a WHOOP, and then you get real crazy with the hips, sir. It’s fun!”
not 2b controversial but have u heard thers a rumor in st petersburg ? have u heard what theyre saying on the street?? Although the tsar did not survive 1 daughter may be still alive….. the princess ANASTASIA !??! (but please do not repeat)
Sapphire One, at your service, are there any flaws with or concepts you wish were explored more? For me, it was Mune and Sohone becoming friends, I feel that could've been explored more. Are there any Trollhunters fanfics that you consider are bad? In Coco, outside of breaking Miguel's curse and sending him home, what else do you think the blessings could do? Finally, in Anastasia, what is your favourite scene or character?
I know that ‘only the sun itself can melt [Glim] now’, but does strengthening her wax also prevent her from freezing, or is she still at risk of that whenever she gets too cold? Can anything be done about that?
There are fics with plotlines or ships that are not to my personal taste, and fics where the writing style is not to my taste and/or difficult to follow, yes, but I will not be naming any names because that feels like picking a fight I don’t have the energy or inclination to follow through on. I try to just ignore fics I don’t like.
I figure the blessings are basically a curse reverse button. Miguel was cursed to be stuck in the Land of the Dead, so a blessing let him go back to the Land of the Living. By that logic, anything a curse can do, a blessing can do the opposite. We don’t see enough about how curses work in that story to really know the limits of a curse’s or blessing’s power. Probably a safe bet would be that it’s possible to bless someone with good health or with good luck, at least for a short term.
I like the dynamite scene, as I’ve said, and I also liked the final fight with Rasputin (both “No one can save you now!” “Wanna bet?!”, and Anastasia stomping the reliquary to pieces), and the musical numbers are fun. I think the Dowager Empress is my favourite character … or maybe the absurdly deep-voiced bug from In The Dark Of The Night.
