A friend and I went to see Man of La Mancha at the Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, DC, yesterday. We met up with the awesome Lindsey of phantomonabudget, who I haven’t seen in years and it was wonderful to meet her in person again. You can read her post about our adventure here.
We had particularly planned to go see this production because Anthony Warlow was cast as the lead of Cervantes, and of course being the enormous Phantom geeks that we are we were thrilled at this opportunity to see this classic former Phantom in another classic musical/role. Alas, as fate would have it, Warlow was not on for the performance we had purchased tickets to.
Happily, our disappointment was short-lived, because the production was phenomenal. Due to Warlow being out, there was a sort of chain-reaction of understudies for a few of the featured roles. Everyone, particularly Dan Sharkey (understudy for Warlow), was amazing - incredible acting, and many fantastic vocals - and no one seemed to be fazed at all by the switching up of roles. The production design was interesting in that there was a single, unchanging set design, and most props were things that were already onstage - repurposed and adapted to different scenes as needed. I will also note that the interpretation was very intense; much darker and disturbing than other versions - and all performed in a single act with no intermission.
If you have the opportunity to go see this production, you really should! It’s every bit as good, and even better than many things I’ve seen on Braodway or national tours.
Note: Photos show phantomonabudget and me posing with the marquee poster outside the theater featuring Anthony Warlow, and with the Shakespeare Theatre Company’s Tony Award for best Regional Theatre (2012). Very cool!
