hey, has anyone talked about setting up Bluesky DID for tumblr blogs? i thought about it before but with the latest influx of users on that site due to Meta nonsense i thought it could be cool, plus also remind people that this site exists 😅

technically it takes a string that begins with "did:plc:" and outputs it at [blog].tumblr.com/.well-known/atproto-did

then people can register on bluesky with @[blog].tumblr.com 🙂

i haven't heard anything about this idea, no. i'm not sure if we'd want to do that without making a decision about whether we're going to side with activitypub or AT protocol (or neither). it's probably more likely that tumblr will be able to do whatever a wordpress plugin can do.

Until something like that happens, you can use EchoFeed to cross-post your [tumblr] blog’s RSS feed (like changes.tumblr.com/rss) to Bluesky, Mastodon, and more.

Happy New Year! the 2025 edition

Another year begins, and looking back, I had a few fun milestones in 2024. I reached 20 years of contributing to WordPress (which was also my top post last year), and I’m hoping for 20 more. This blog has also been around for over 20 years now … I probably should have made a post about that. I finally joined Mastodon. It turns out that I needed to find a smaller server with the right community…

You created your website to reach an audience and to communicate directly with that audience. Wouldn’t it be great if there was an easier way for you to connect with them and make it easier for them to follow you and engage with your content online? In today’s episode of the Fediverse Files, DocPop walks you through how to connect your WordPress site to the Fediverse using ActivityPub.

In this episode of the Fediverse Files, ‪‪Doc Pop‬ talks with Bart Decrem, the co-creator of Mammoth, an open source Mastodon app for iOS. Doc and Bart discuss how the walled gardens of the present are finally getting some real competition from a better, and more open social web. A return to the original promise of the web. That anyone can find a home, their own place on the internet, and connect with whomever they want without getting trapped within a single platform thanks to open protocols like ActivityPub and open platforms like Mastodon. Whether it’s through a newsletter, a podcast or a publisher’s website, Bart’s goal is to get a million websites and a hundred million people onto the fediverse.

The decentralized nature of the network introduces inherent issues and trade-offs that ruin the end user experience, and the people who are by and large responsible for anything that might ameliorate those trade-offs are also the people who are least likely to perceive an issue with them. Mainstream adoption as such is not really possible without pissing off a lot of the people who have made Mastodon their home, or at least getting those people to make some compromises they will not want to make. If they don't want to, that's fine, but that will have to come at the same time alongside it remaining an obscure, niche network.

Zaptodon

Uncovering the fossils and auto-posting to Mastodon via Zapier really is a thing.

On a site, I use Zapier to automate a specific set of tasks. Every day, the website sets up a show/character of the day (I think you know what site this is…) and it posts that show/character to Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook and …. Mastodon. Or at least it does now. Zapier Caveat! I pay for this service. The webhooks used are in the starter package at $19.99/month annually. There’s a service,…

so mozilla is making a Mastodon instance which is fine but i really like their approach to moderation policies (emph. mine):

You’ll notice a big difference in our content moderation approach compared to other major social media platforms. We’re not building another self-declared “neutral” platform. We believe that far too often, “neutrality” is used as an excuse to allow behaviors and content that’s designed to harass and harm those from communities that have always faced harassment and violence. Our content moderation plan is rooted in the goals and values expressed in our Mozilla Manifesto — human dignity, inclusion, security, individual expression and collaboration. We understand that individual expression is often seen, particularly in the US, as an absolute right to free speech at any cost. Even if that cost is harm to others. We do not subscribe to this view. We want to be clear about this. We’re building an awesome sandbox for us all to play in, but it comes with rules governing how we engage with one another. You’re completely free to go elsewhere if you don’t like them.

yes yes yes yessss. i really wish platforms would make these kinds of considerations and try and avoid this idea of "neutrality".

neutral is just another way of upholding the status quo

Before we go too far, it’s helpful to understand what this vision for a better future of social actually is. “Decentralized social networking” is a heady concept, and it’s quite different from the way the internet works now. But here’s the simplest way I can think to explain it: to decentralize social networking is to completely separate the user interface from the underlying data. Any time you sign up for a new social app, you won’t have to rebuild your audience or re-find all your friends; your whole following and followers list come with you. Those things should be part of the internet, not part of an app.
Email is the best example of how this system works now: it’s based on open protocols that lots of services tap into, so while there are many email apps with different features and quality levels, your contacts carry over and will always work. (Can you imagine if you needed an Outlook address for your Outlook-using colleagues and a Gmail address for your Gmail-using friends, and then a Hotmail account just to talk to your aunt Gertrude? Well, that’s currently how social works now.)

Share your blog posts on Mastodon with Jetpack

Jetpack 11.9, released today, now includes a Mastodon sharing button. Enjoy! 🐘

After dipping my toes into the Fediverse for the past few months, I wanted the Jetpack plugin to be there to help bloggers who wanted to interact more with the Fediverse on their sites. Jetpack includes Sharing buttons that can be handy for your readers to quickly share your posts to their Social Network of choice ; adding a Mastodon button seemed like a no-brainer! (more…) “”

just found you mentioned in an Austrian article about mastodon. translation of your bit: "And there are also negative incidents: For example, the actor Wil Wheaton (known as Wesley Crusher in the "Star Trek" series "The Next Generation") was kicked off a server because some people don't like him and apparently reported him so often about alleged violations to the server operator that he was excluded. The sheer number of messages is said to have overwhelmed this server administrator."

Avatar

Yep. I was 100% bullied and brigaded off a server, because it was amusing to some number of children to do so.

Thing is, I can walk away and it doesn't matter to me. But when those same people do the same thing to someone without my privilege, it can be devastating to them in a lot of ways. That's a huge problem that none of these social networks seem to be willing to solve.

every time tumblr or twitter is shit, recommendations for mastodon instances start going around. my criticism of mastodon hasn’t changed for years now, and it’s a variation on “imagine if tumblr drama could result in a website being deleted and your worst ex getting access to every dm you’ve ever sent”

did you know that mastodon admins can read your dms as long as either you or the recepient are on an instance they host, because they’re not encrypted

proponents argue it’s not a problem when it’s actually extremely a problem considering that mastodon (by design) encourages small friend groups to run instances together and have personal relationships with admins

like it’s just not fit for purpose
