I love translating the elvhen language, and I really want to translate what the final solavellan dialogue actually translates to.

And if anyone has screencaps of Solas and Elgar'nan speech fighting, feel free to hand them over, I desperately want to translate those!

Give me any elvish you're curious about from dav and I'll try my best to translate!

Trsl of the "vows":

Solas: "Ar ghilas vir banal" Lavellan: "Tel banal ar ama. Vir shiral ma lasa, bellanaris"

Dalish vows: “Sylaise enaste var aravel. Lama, ara las mir lath. Bellanaris.

Okkkayyy, let's get to translating the solavellan "vows" from elvhen more literally! (It is so fun decoding elvhen!)

To make a blueprint for structure, I worked backwards with a phrase we know well:

Ar lasa mala revas
You are free

LOOOOOOOVE me an Elvhen Translation get in me

As ever, much more meaningful than the translation we got in game.

so funny in dragon age inquisition where everyone was like "hoooly fuck. can solas shut up. can he stop talking about spirits and the fade for 5 fucking secondsss." is like if you had a coworker who texted you nonstop like "broooo I love surfing i love the sea 💦🏝⛵🌊 haha water and shit yo. man let's hit some waves let's cowabunga let's swim with the fishiessss haha hmu" and then you find out he's poseidon

I've seen it said that Rook is a better romance option for Solas because unlike Lavellan, they know who he is from the get go. So let me make something clear:

Rook does not know Solas better than Lavellan does. They know his history, his crimes, even his regrets, but what he shows when they talk to him is very much a mask.

Fen'harel is not who Solas is. As dishonest as he was about his past during his time with the Inquisition, he also came the closest to being himself ever since he took a body.

In sappy terms, he hid his deeds and plans from Lavellan, but not his heart. With Rook, it's the opposite.

Who we see in Veilguard is not some kind of "Solas unmasked", it's Solas who has returned to wearing the mask he was allowed to shed for a little while and hide the fact he'd ever worn it.

The raggedy apostate who plays mental chess with Bull, trolls Sera, beats Blackwall at diamondback, who nerds out about magic with Dorian and approves of helping every single hinterlands peasant you encounter, that's the real Solas. Keeping his past a secret is what allowed him to stop being what his service to Mythal and his people made him into, even if for just a little while.

someone please explain to me how keeping the veil up makes sense

  • last we heard it was already failing. is its strength being sustained by just solas' life force somehow better and more stable than when it was being sustained by both elgar'nan's and ghilan'nain's?
  • are we all cool with the spirits still being closed off from the world? because i was under the impression that was a problem
  • iirc there is still LOTS of blight (??) stuffed into the fade like a sausage, and I understand we need to NOT loose that upon the world, but if all other signs point to veil = bad, wouldn't that just make this yet another stopgap between now and Problem Solved?
  • nevermind I talked myself into Solas & Lavellan cleansing the blight from within to eventually bring down the veil anyway. score

one thing i will never get over is before fighting elgar’nan, when you talk to your companions the final time, is dorian and solasmancer inquisitor looking at each other and he asks her:

“so after this…you’ll be off again?”

“something like that”

she made up her mind. she knew she was going to go with solas and she didn’t want to tell her best friend to break his heart. 😭😭 i’m sick!!

haha just thinking about how solas might admire that mage lavellan's will is indomitable if he feels his own will was not 🙃

Origins: Only the Magisters have ever walked physically in the Fade. Such a feat has never been repeated, and the hubris of their actions unleashed an ancient evil on the world that terrorises Thedas to this day. Inquisition: Your trip through the Fade at Adamant was unprecedented and dangerous and we should make sure no-one does it again. Veilguard: 12 bedroom Fade Flat for Rent, 300 Sovreigns/month

Rook: Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me three times? That's double shame on me. Fool me four times?! Now you're just picking on a vulnerable person!

Solas:...
