For those who are curious, this is the beautiful flower of the snake gourd, Trichosanthes cucumerina. It’s a climbing vine, grown on aerial racks for its edible fruit, which can grow to be over a meter long. It’s native to Southeast Asia and, strangely, Australia as well, and it’s also grown in many countries in Africa. It’s very uncommon to see this plant cultivated elsewhere. The gourds are described as mucilaginous, and sometimes are faintly bitter and odd-smelling before being cooked.

I just learned that the Russian word for “ladybug” translates to “God’s Little Cow”

It’s the same in Irish! bóín Dé!

in hebrew it’s “our rabbi moses’s cow”

Oh I love this news!!!!

Multiple cultures upon seeing a ladybug for the first time: “Who’s cow is this????”

Went down to the riverside to take pictures of the river. Did not take any pics of the river. Ended up taking pictures of the lichen on the trail bridges instead.

every time I see someone from outside australia (or inside australia tbh) say “everything in australia wants to kill you lol” I want to scream. you are buying into colonial narratives! you are reinforcing the construction of the “aussie battler”! you are ignoring the way first nations people have lived with the land for centuries! you are participating in the homogenisation of australia in your belief that this is a land that needs to be tamed! shut up shut up shut up
