* indicates someone I saw live in 2016
The Best:
Anna Wise - The Feminine: Act I Genre: R&B
One of Kendrick Lamar’s favorite collaborators steps out in the forefront with this empowering and effective debut EP.
Proof: Precious Possession, BitchSlut, Go!
Cruel Youth* - +30mg Genre: Alternative / Indie Pop
Natalia Kills (real name Teddy Sinclair) was an artist who’s music I really enjoyed that didn't seem to quite catch on like I expected it too. The feisty singer instead re-branded with two more female musicians and made the all-girl trio Cruel Youth with her husband on as producer. For their debut EP the women take no prisoners from their intoxicating and infectious sound with Sinclair’s powerful vocals.
Proof: Alexis Texas, Mr. Watson, I Don’t Love You
HONNE - Gone Are The Days Genre: Indie Pop / R&B / Soul
In preparation of their debut Warm On A Cold Night, released later in 2016, the London duo put out this soulful gem of an EP; their 5th total. Personally I prefer this EP to the debut LP.
Jai Wolf - Kindred Spirits Genre: Electronic
Kindred Spirits is a euphoric and atmospheric collection of chill-wave electronic music. The Bangladesh born producer/DJ has been bouncing around making stellar remixes for a couple years now but shows on this debut EP he’s got some exceptional original music to make as well.
Kill J - Quasi Genre: Synth-Pop
Kill J has positioned herself to be one of the next Scandinavian pop stars to watch with this infectious and flippant EP. The Danish singer’s impacting and mechanical production works beautifully juxtaposed with her high-toned and sultry vocals.
Lewis Del Mar - EP Genre: Alternative / Indie Rock
Lewis Del Mar introduces themselves and their hard-hitting industrial Rock to the world with this debut EP. This won’t be the last we hear from them in 2016 though, just check my top album list….
Liss - First Genre: Synth-Pop
This smooth and soulful pop music comes courtesy of a new Denmark quartet Liss. With some apparent influences from funk, R&B and 80’s soul this is an easy-listening EP to vibe with; which leaves you wanting more.
Proof: Sorry, Good Enough, Miles Apart
Mr Little Jeans* - F E V E R S Genre: Synth-Pop
Back in 2014 Mr Little Jeans released one of my favorite albums of that year in her debut Pocketknife. As the Norwegian-born singer works on her sophomore album she gifted fans with this little collection of new songs. F E V E R S continues where her most successful songs on her debut left off, with thunderous and impacting production backdrops for her subdued and emotional vocals to inhabit with tremendous grace.
Proof: Stitches, Fevers, Fool 4 You
Stwo - D.T.S.N.T. Genre: Electronic / R&B
This atmospheric and hazy electronic R&B, by French producer Stwo, is both sexy and eerie at the same time. The sensual moodiness with a layer of mystery in the production is captivating throughout as various singers come in and take their turns filling in the cavernous voids between the layered synths.
TĀLĀ - Zāl Genre: Electronica / R&B
Since 2014, some of my favorite music has been the unique and experimental R&B from the London singer/producer TĀLĀ. Her 5th EP, Zāl, continues that tradition and might be her most complete work yet. Utilizing the influences from her Iranian ethnicity infuses a great mixture of musical cultures in her sound that is distinctive and admirable. I strongly suggest anyone go through her exceptional back catalog of EP’s as well as listening to this one.
Proof: Fire Starter, Talk 2 Me, Zāl
Tunji Ige - Missed Calls Genre: Hip Hop
Soulful and impacting hip hop invade the ears with this great debut EP from the young Philly rapper.
Proof: War, On My Grind, All Night
Vince Staples - Prima Donna Genre: Hip Hop
Proof: War Ready, Loco (Feat. Kilo Kish), Big Time
21 Savage - X (Stwo Remix) Feat. Future.
Roy Wood$ - Jealousy (stwo Remix).
Stwo - Out At Night (Feat. A.CHAL).
ZAYN - Pillowtalk (Stwo Remix).
Stwo - Haunted (Feat. Sevdaliza).
Kehlani - Runnin’ (Stwo Remix).
Stwo & ELHAE - Oceans.
Majid Jordan - Her (Stwo Edit).
BANKS - Drowning (Stwo Remix). Yes. Yes. Yes.
Stwo - Aura.
