I just... don’t understand why there’s no focus on Malcolm and Gil’s relationship in s2, no focus on the team, no focus on character development for Dani and JT? That stuff is so important, why did they completely disregard it? 😔

Honestly, though I did enjoy this episode a lot, I completely agree! They keep trying to push forward new and interesting plotlines without realizing that what we want is the intimacy of our favorite characters and their relationships being explored. That DOES NOT mean Martin getting laid, that doesn’t just mean teasing Brightwell, it means developing those bonds and holding onto them

I’m glad the episode was centered around Edrisa, it felt like we got some depth and understanding for once, even more so than the episode last season around her. We got to see her interact with other people who don’t find her comments weird, we got to see her thrive

We need more of that with everyone in this show. JT hasn’t gotten ANYTHING this season, unless you count the racial injustice plot which fell kind of flat and didn’t tackle the issue very substantially despite being teased it would

Alright so I still see a lot of quarrel over what characters have been doing this season, and ‘antis’ are starting to appear more frequently so let’s get one thing straight

You probably don’t hate the characters. You hate how they are written

The problems I had season 1 feel even more amplified this season and it makes me sad. I think the three components of story writing are story, setting and characters. You never want to have your characters as the last component... but Prodigal Son puts setting first, then plot, then characters (at least it’s not plot first tbh) the issue with that is that we only get to learn more about characters when it’s convenient to the plot

There have been a lot of what I feel are OOC moments this season, and I think the main reason for those is so they can move along the plot. Dani pointing a gun at him wasnt about Dani pointing a gun at him, it was about trying to show the audience that Malcolm has become more unhiged

JT’s reactions regarding current events—to put it lightly— are less about how his character would react and more about the writers wanting to bring up those issues. While I think it’s great we are talking about said issues, this is not the way I was hoping to learn more about JT.

The characters aren’t there as the souls of this show, they’re there to fill a role in what’s happening. That was the same thing with Eve too.

It’s also why some people are very annoyed by Edrisa and others aren’t. I said in a Pson group chat earlier that “I think Edrisa has a lot of potential to be a great characters but the writers stuck her in the ‘obsessive quirky lines’ box. I think she’s got a lot of fun moments, they just need to stop making her one dimensional”

Don’t get me wrong. I love this show. Adore it actually. The setting and premise (which they put first) is phenomenal. When they do focus on characters it’s deep and psychologicallly thorough. There are a lot of great lines. Prodigal son is both fun and dark and thought provoking. They just need to work more on the characters that are supposed to bring this to us.

When they said they were going to focus on characters more this season, this is not what I thought they meant.

But hey, I’m sticking around. I’m here for the long run and I have hope that things will change :)
