Jaskier waits at night. (1.3k, kind of sad ☆ also on AO3)
Jaskier is not sleepy.
No, no, no. He is not sleepy no matter how much his head is drooping. The night is young, and he mustn’t fall asleep.
The chair digs into Jaskier’s bum uncomfortably, so he curls his legs despite the faint ache in his joints. The door to their inn room remains shut, the corridor outside quiet without the footsteps of a witcher returning. He strains his eyes open, keeping the frame of the door in his vision.
The hunt sounds dangerous from the too-brief description Geralt gave him in reluctance. He could get injured. He could need Jaskier’s help when he gets back bleeding half to death—but still insisting he’s fine, of course. Jaskier has not stayed with the witcher for long, but he knows better than to believe those lies.
He knows quite a lot about the witcher, even though Geralt never admits they are friends, even though they’ve only been traveling together for two years.
Or is it three years already? Four? Time flies when adventure awaits at every corner, and Jaskier loses track of the days between monsters and ballads.
But, yes, he knows a lot about Geralt. The subtle smile on his face when Jaskier tells a particularly cheeky joke, the silver glint of his hair in the shimmering morning light, the elegant stance when he readies for a fight, the sharp line of his jaw, the curve of his lips, the softness of them when he kisses Jaskier—
In his fantasies, at least. Jaskier shakes his head to chase away those unbidden thoughts. It’s truly too late and his mind is jumbled. Geralt cannot learn the thoughts he harbors. He tolerates Jaskier as it is, and this will certainly be the last straw.
Geralt would leave, if he learned how much Jaskier loves him.
And it’s not like the witcher hasn’t tried. At the beginning of their acquaintance, Geralt has sneaked away one too many times while Jaskier slept, being the quiet witcher he is. Or, he has also fled right after a hunt, leaving Jaskier in a room that was no longer theirs, not realizing until sunrise.

He doesn’t mention his hand when the dust settles.
There are bodies to clear away, people to mourn. Jaskier steps back for that- he’s not a Witcher. He doesn’t know these men but he does know what they meant to each other and he knows he has no part in whatever mourning they need to do. So he steps back to allow their rituals.
He finds a bucket and scrub brush and gets to work clearing the blood from the stones while the others are gone. He can be useful in other ways.
His hand burns every time he dunks it in the hot water but he ignores it for as long as he can, scrubbing until the water is dirty but the floors are mostly cleared of blood.
He’s trying very hard not to think about how it’s getting harder and harder to move his index and middle fingers as the days pass. It’s the cold, he tells himself. It’s got to be. Every other part of him is stiff and cold and trembling just a bit with the way the wind howls through the newest holes in Kaer Morhen’s walls. He’s only human. Of course he’s affected by the cold.
Jaskier uses his left hand to scrub when the burn gets to be too much, his right to steady the bucket as he washes the blood away. Yennefer could probably magic the stains gone but she’s only just gotten her chaos back and she’s still a bit unsteady. Besides, she’s healing up the surviving Witchers. Jaskier can do this for them if nothing else.
He’s careful to remove himself from the hall before they come back down the mountain. He doesn’t want to be in the way if they’re going to drink and mourn and fight out their feelings. He might get caught in the crossfire or worse, interfere.
The Witchers are people and they’ve lost brothers tonight. Jaskier will not do anything that upsets their grieving process.
Jaskier The Bard :)
“It’s the finale of the season. It’s the big bash through which we can tell the final strands of the story. Jaskier spends most of his time under a table, as is right and proper. “ — Joey Batey
