Hey! Sorry for the inconvenience, I just wanted to tell you that I have been following your project for some time and I find it really incredible what you have been able to do for yourself, my respects (っ.❛ ᴗ ❛.)っ

I wanted to know if I could ask. Can you give some advice for artists who want to dedicate themselves partially or completely to concept art?

any tips for creating characters (design and writing) or a personal preference that you like when creating a character

How to attract people for that make they to interested in your story and your original characters, And how do a project like this and remain sane in the end? •́ ‿ ,•̀

Thank you so much! I'll see what I can tell you. I went to school for character design / concept art. But I never actually got a job in that. My jobs became animation and comic books. If you want to do character design as a career. You need to pick a side, either games or TV/Animation. The styles and requirements for each is vastly different. You have to draw in a lot of styles overall, learn shape design, and be really good at drawing the human form. No matter the style (personally) the biggest tip is silhouette. Any character of mine has to have a distinctive silhouette, otherwise it's boring.

As for the last thing, I have no idea! 10 years of doing this and its a mystery. People don't care about your oc work, that's just a fact. So you have to GRIND ALOT to see any sort of return. It takes a very long time, you have to be consistent and lucky. Good luck!

I was wondering about Shape and Colour Language. I understand the concepts, but I'm still unsure how to put them to use. I thought of this when redesigning one of my characters. I noticed that the shapes I used confused me after not looking at them for some time. (the OC in question is on the Good side, but is still Dangerous.) What's the best way to design a character in a way that makes their motive clear, but their strength unknown to another person in such a way, that it makes them seem a little unsafe to be around?

Oh, this is one of my favorite tropes! This type of character depends on three things: 1 - Are you trying to deceive the audience? 2 - Are they meek or prideful? 3 - How dangerous are they? Think about how the character holds themselves, cute and meek, or prideful and full of strut? From there you can decide how far you want to deceive the audience and how dangerous the character is.

Good day to you Luna!

Ive always enjoyed how you deaign your characters from the use of shape language to the use of color.

I noticed that many of your designs have around 6-8 (and more on your latest) colors in use at a time. I was always told that you should work with a limited pallete when designing characters, but you somehow designs lovely characters "breaking" that rule.

How do you do it? I always get overwhelmed if i have more than 5 colors in a designs but usually it lacks the contrast and "pop" that your designs have.

Also when you design characters, do you start with a theme, their personality or their role in a story?

COLOR THEORY

This is a great question! So when it comes to color in designs; character/backgrounds/props, generally less is more. You pick 3 colors : 2 right next to each other ( analogous colors ) : 1 on the the otherside of the color wheel ( complementary colors ). From there you want to vary the value/saturation. So there's a dark color - mid tone - highlight (usually the complementary color).

So It might seem like I have a lot of colors, but in actuality it's only 2-3 colors with varied saturation/values to create contrast.

You want a 2/3 ratio split of the analogous colors with the remaining 1/3 being the brighter complementary color to make little details POP. Now sometimes I will use 4 colors in a design, it still works because it's all about balance. I made a little crud pie chart for a general idea. Faye's main color scheme is blue -> green highlighted with red/purple/yellow. Her vibe is poisonous, and poisonous creatures tend to be colorful.

With the right balance you can make any color scheme work, you have to give each color their place, some are more dominate then others. If you make a design with every color 25/25/25/25 equal split, the design will come off as bland and nothing will stand out. But if you make it 40/40/20 suddenly that 20% stands out.

Thinking of palettes in terms of pie-charts will help out seeing the color balance in your design. Give it a shot if you're struggling with making your design pop!

I love your character designs so much and you are an inspiration to me! Especially how gorgeous your Hellven designs are! :) How would you describe your character design process? Do you start of with an description of character or just jump right in to see what goes? Any advice for a beginner/intermediate character designer?

SHAPE THEORY

Thank you! I hope to receive more Hellven questions in the future as I publish more official material. Right now I'm working on the cover. As for my designing process....

I start with a general idea / vibe before I start drawing. Usually at this point I have a style picked out, in Hellven's case it's sharp abstract angles and shapes. So the silhouette is super important. Dante is a priestly devil, he's serious and a authority figure, so his stance has to be tall/firm. He is mainly made up of squares and triangles. I collect references, and once I have an idea of his personality I go for it and make several designs.

The first design was too "round and cute" so I sharpened his features. Once I get the "Idea" it's all about tweaking stuff till it's perfect. In this case I simplified his design.

Some designs are easier then others, and some require to be scrapped multiple times before it rings true. A good design to me has to be unique, well put-together and fit the character role/personality. A character should have a certain natural FLOW to them, and my job is to get rid of any bumps that may distract the audience.

Hope that helps~

Notes from “The Animator’s Survival Kit” book.

[Pg.259 - 265]  This is the end of my book studies. I’m pretty proud to have gotten through it and do a handful of the exercises. But this is only step one, I’m moving onto more advance animation techniques and will be posting those as I complete them. At the moment I’m currently wrestling with Toon Boom, so we’ll see how that goes.

If you want to see a specific tutorial from me, leave suggestions below! I’m trying to do more broad concepts, rather than anatomy stuff. I’m not the best person to ask about anatomy, I’ll be focusing on my cartooning skills and designing stuff. I also have small animation tutorials :D

I’ll post the tips publicly but my reference material and examples will be Patreon exclusive. If you like these tips and want to see more, support my Patreon! It allows me to focus on more material like this and I would really appreciate it .

My last drawing tutorial was back in 2017, whoa, welp it looks like my drawing skills have gotten better. Since I have some more spare time, I will be doing new/updated art tutorials revisiting some of my previous topics.

What are some of the biggest digital art tips you can offer? Sorry if this is asking too much, you're just such an amazing artist and inspiration ^^"

Sure! Specifically for digital art my top 5 basic tips are: 1. Invest in a good screen tablet. I know they are pricey but after using a screen tablet I would never go back to one without a screen. Luckily Wacom has started making more affordable screen tablets. 6 yrs ago I got mine for 1,200 but now the new ones are 700 or less. TwT

2. If you travel alot, or want to work away from your set-up. Get an Ipad, I’ve used mine everyday and it’s fantastic for productivity. My top programs for it is Procreate and Rough Animator. In total, with sales, I got my travel set-up for 340$.

3. If you don’t know what drawing program to use, use Clip Studio Paint, got mine for 80$. It is my top program for illustration, comics and animation. I have Toon Boom , Photoshop and Animate. Clip Studio Paint still beats them all because the line quality is the best. CSP, 10/10 best bae always.

4. I see many new artists struggle with line quality, I did too. A couple things to improve: You don’t have to get things right in one perfect stroke, you’re allowed to go back and fill in gaps that should be darker. Lower your pen pressure, so you don’t have to press so hard to get the full dimension of the brush, this is also better for your wrist and tablet.

5. Colors are extremely difficult for digital art, even I continue to struggle. Try to limit yourself to a color palette. You can find many online, generally try to stick to 1-3 colors. Preferably 1-2. For SKZ, the main color palette is various shades of purple/yellow. I get the character’s color schemes to match the environment by using Screen/overlay/multiply effects.

[Test page for new chapter style, Skully’s colors are not accurate] I could make a whole tutorial for color and line by itself. I probably should, perhaps in the future. Thanks for enjoying my stuff! Hoped this helped :)
