“Can you take me to your home?” Mirabel mumbled. “It’s been a difficult day.”
“Mariposa…” You uttered, looking down at the girl as you gently brushed a strand of hair from her hair. Her eyes were tired, you could see that much.
“I promised your mom I’d stay here with you.”
“I don’t want to.” She admitted silently, looking down at the burned out candle in her hands, a stray tear falling down her cheek.
“I need to be alone for a while. Away from this family. Just for a couple minutes.” She croaked out, glancing up at you with pleading eyes. “I just need to get my story straight.”
You frowned at her words, but gave her a reassuring nod.
“Okay.” You whispered. “But you are going to explain this to your mother.”
Mirabel nodded tiredly, already standing up, looking around at the rubble surrounding you. You noticed her unspoken pain as you raised yourself beside her, offering her your arm.
“We can rebuild it.” You tried to assure. “This is not the end of the story, Mirabel. Not yet.”
