i find it really interesting that keith doesn’t really let himself process/believe that krolia’s his mother until there’s irrefutable proof that she is, and not in a “haha look how dense keith is” kind of way. it’s like he’s objectively aware that people care about him but doesn’t truly believe it despite the mountain of evidence, which is imo pretty consistent with his characterization up until this point.

while i was rewatching vld before s5 dropped, i noticed the dissonance between keith’s line about shiro never giving up on him:

and how easily he accepts holo!shiro turning on him during the trials of marmora:

granted, his line about shiro never giving up on him comes well after shiro’s already overtly expressed his continued support in light of keith’s galra heritage, but the way it’s phrased - “the one person who never gave up on me” - suggests that shiro has consistently been in keith’s corner since their garrison days. yet despite their steadfast relationship, being abandoned by shiro remains one of keith’s most deep seated fears; he readily accepts what the mindscape shows him (just look at the resignation on his face after he steels himself) without questioning whether it’s consistent with the way shiro has treated him in the past.

so i don’t think what krolia said about not leaving him again flew over his head per se - it’s more like he shelved it away because there were more pressing matters at hand and then followed up with her for a proper confirmation because he needed to know for sure before getting his hopes up.

it’s just kind of heartbreaking because on an individual level keith is incredibly self-assured - he’s confident in his abilities and secure in his moral convictions. but when it comes to his interpersonal relationships, his conviction falters. he cares intensely for the people around him, but his awareness of that care being reciprocated seems almost… detached? he doesn’t process or internalize evidence that he’s cared for, but will quickly accept evidence to the contrary, even if it’s weak or inconsistent with what he already knows.

i don’t expect (or even want, lbr) keith’s abandonment issues to be resolved overnight, but i do hope his reunion with his mother helps him make some strides towards overcoming them and truly realizing that he’s loved.

p.s. this is in no way meant to shade humourous posts about keith’s response (or lack thereof) to krolia resolving not to leave him again since they clearly don’t come from a place of malice, i just think it’s an interesting subject to explore on a character level as well!

Keith: ♫ I’m flyiiiin’ in the Red Liiiiooon. You think you’re gonna get away, no, no, no. He’s comin’ to save the day ♫

Shiro: Uuhh, Keith, your… your radio is still on.

Eugene Lee and Tim Hedrick talk about Episode 6 from Season 1: Taking Flight on the Voltron Official Podcast: Form Podcast by Nerdist.

“Yeah, that’s kind of the fun of these early episodes as you get to see everyone start to have their own, you know, special atributes. Keith is this very natural pilot. (Laughs) We actually at one point were— when he’s flying he would be kind of singing to himself (more laughs), we had a song for him (…) but yeah, it didn’t, didn’t make it in.”
