I like the idea of Inej visiting Kaz in Ketterdam as much as anyone. Y’know what I like better? The idea of Kaz deciding to work on Inej’s ship, giving up the toxic life that is the Barrel and listening to someone else’s plans for once in his life. I like the idea of Kaz swabbing the deck, literally the lowest member of the crew, and he thinks to himself “Ghezen, I could be the richest man in Ketterdam right now.” And then he looks over at Inej, who is sitting on the edge of the ship and tossing crumbs to the seagulls, the wind in her hair and the saltwater making it ever so wavy, a map on her lap where she’s supposed to be charting their next course, her clothes loose and casual, no longer needing to be tantalizing and sensual, nor athletic and useful. And he thinks for the first time in his life that this might actually be better than money.

I don't think he'd scrub the deck or that he'd be the lowest rank of the crew because he does have important skills that would be valuable to Inej, more so than most of the other crew members, otherwise he wouldn't have made it so big in the Barrel; but more importantly, he'd be Inej's trophy husband who galavants around like he's the shit just because he's dating the Captain. Everyone hates his guts, which is his Sunday entertainment. He absolutely would still make the plans- most of them are way too complicated for situations that do not require complicated schemes, but Inej lets him because she knows if he can't sharpen and train his mind, he'll become restless and go cray cray and, idk, lose sleep or throw a crew member over board or something

Ok soooo yes I did actually want to elaborate on this a lil more bc I was NOT clear with what I wanted to say the first time, so I’m gonna use you as a jumping off point (NOT attacking just to be clear lol)

but the point of Kaz swabbing the decks is not bc he doesn’t have skills useful to Inej, it’s because I like the idea of Kaz for once being BENEATH Inej in their relationship. The nature of their relationship will always have this power dynamic to it that is just truly unforgettable at all times. Maybe it’s forgettable to Kaz sure, but Inej always knows that she is somewhat in debt to Kaz. And yes, Kaz would never act on that debt, but Inej still knows that he holds it. He freed her from the Menagerie, as much as he likes to say that he just helped her free herself. He held the cards. And yeah, Per Haskell technically held her indenture, but he wouldn’t have even cared about Inej had Kaz not brought her up. I want a fic where Kaz finally has that power dynamic shifted, where he is uncomfortable with the crew because he doesn’t know them, where he feels a little like Inej’s pet, just a tiny bit, because I want him to have even a semblance of what she experienced, and how hard it was for her to form love in that experience, and how hard she had to fight herself to stay with him for that love. I want him to fight her past for her.

THEN he can be a happy trophy husband and do map shit, I’d love that

Totally disagree with this take, respectfully. But I reblog because I like how in this fandom we can be so kind to each other with such different opinions. (I come from the Boku no Hero Academia fandom. Do you have any idea what a dumpster that is sometimes?) High five, everyone!

I just disagree that there will always be that power dynamic, that's not how I personally see Kaz and Inej's relationship. Even less when they BOTH know that they have been saving each other's lives the whole time. Also disagree with the need to put Kaz in a place of discomfort. As if his leadership capacity was simply non-existent, as if he hadn't had to fight for years to be where he is. As if he hadn't achieved with blood and sweat everything he achieved. Disagree with being "Inej's pet". And disagree with "listening to someone else's plans" as if that has ever been a problem in the story.

As if he were not capable of having his own goal, that he had nothing to do with revenge, or nothing to do with Inej.

In short, I disagree.

I thought I'd never see

Inspired by the breathtaking fic save the undone years by Whitherward @whatanybodygets which is an AU about Kaz and Inej during WW1 where Kaz is a soldier and Inej is a nurse. This moment that stuck with me:

“All this waiting, and his brother appears at his bedside like a ghost in the night. [...] [Captain Reitveld] simply drops onto the edge of Kaz’s mattress and yanks him forward by the shoulders, wrapping him into a tight hug.

She sees Kaz go tense for a moment, and then relax, bury his face into his brother’s shoulder.

And then he begins to sob."

Been working on this for a month. I can't put into words how beautiful of a writer she is. I am always in awe and must drop everything for it.

How Inej was fully prepared to murder a room full of people to defend Kaz at the slat. How Inej likens Kaz as a priest ‘stood at his pulpit ready to preach’ despite how much she knows their views on religion differ. How Kaz’s greatest weakness is Inej. How he climbed a steeple with a bad leg just because he was worried about her. How Inej trusted him to be close enough to her to be able to kiss her neck after literally just saying she still flinched when Jesper put his arm around her sometimes. How Kaz said his eyes had always hungrily snatched up Inej like the thief he was. How he used every last bit of his money, how he liquidated all of his assets (including his family’s farm?) in order to pay off her indenture. How she knew he was the only one for her before he’d ever even touched her bare skin.
