It really bothers me when I see MRAs harping on family court favoring women after divorce. Mothers getting custody of their children is actually a rather new concept and for much of history children were seen as the property of their father and fathers were usually granted custody automatically. This precedent existed into the 1970s. And still the court is biased in favor of men, men win 93% of custody cases they participate in, women are twice as likely to lose custody if they report abuse perpetrated by the father. Courts are still biased towards fathers and it is detrimental, the reason you see more custodial mothers is because men willingly give up custody. If they fought, chances are they’d win, even if it was against the child’s best interest.

Ok wow why am I literally now seeing posts where people are claiming that women are flat out not oppressed on the basis of gender in the western world and suggesting otherwise makes you a TERF. And they have thousands of notes and are appearing on my dashboard. What. The actual fuck. Is happening on this website. To the left right now in general. The prioritization of men's issues always comes with the insistence that they're actually being ignored in favour of women's issues. Theres pages on pages written on men's suicide rates and male loneliness that cite studies in which the data for women show an equal or even greater rate of the same problems. Thousands of reddit threads about trans men being ignored while trans women get their posts taken down for the same thing. The illusion of men being ignored or treated badly in feminist spaces is nothing but the visceral reaction people have to seeing a man not being treated as the most important person in the room for 2 seconds.

while we’re all publicly critiquing the “male loneliness” hysteria i want to mention that the “men’s mental health!!!” handwringing is a part of it. which is not to say that I am not empathetic to the mental health struggles of men as individuals. my wish is for everyone to have access to quality mental health care, and for people in the depths of mental illness to find support and get better.

But it’s frankly a disservice to women and everyone else to frame “men’s mental health” as a uniquely urgent social issue. I’m not going to unpack all of the statistics right now, but suffice to say men’s mental health issues are not inherently worse or more prevalent than anyone else’s. In fact, women suffer from depression at higher rates than men.

Yet women’s collective mental health does not generate mass concern or rhetorical pandering like that of men, because:

(1) our society at large does not encourage/reward collective empathy for women the way it does for men. conversely, efforts to talk about women’s issues are often treated as suspect and met with overwhelming anti-feminist backlash.

And (2) women’s mental health cannot be dredged up as an apolitical scapegoat for things like mass murder and sexual violence. because women as a group, despite suffering from equal or greater mental health struggles, do not commit those crimes at nearly the same rates as men. And when they do, no one is saying “but she was depressed” or “we should have been nicer to her” or “if only he hadn’t rejected her.”

And all this lip service to “men’s mental health” does not address or even attempt to address the explicit radical misogyny that these disaffected young men are embracing. because that would require a serious critique of systemic patriarchy and gender politics, which tends to unsettle the people who are invested in maintaining that system.

Anyway. It is extremely tiresome to see widespread patriarchal violence and resentment toward women’s social advancement dismissed with cries of “men need to be coddled more!!!”

one of the bigger issues with misogyny is that people have difficulty seeing it, especially in our society now. it's not obvious to them. it's been naturalized since the beginning of human civilization. roe being overruled was an enormous piece of evidence that misogyny is entrenched and going nowhere and informs policy making on the lowest and highest levels. but most people don't understand why that should be evidence of misogyny to begin with. most people don't think about in those terms. the takes on the left were largely about how this will only affect some women, as if the wholesale rejection that any person of a certain identified gender should not be able to decide how their organs are used is not utterly repugnant. and then if you want to point to less obvious evidence of misogyny, things in the day-to-day, things like the "karen" meme or the fact that most cis women i know can't contemplate hairy legs or going somewhere public without foundation or the fact that stunt women get injured more bc the costumes of female characters are inadequate or the fact that inanimate objects of nature or machine have female names or pronouns or even the fact that in online fan spaces people can show little compassion or interest in female characters--little things that add up to full picture, but when pointed out earn the pointer rolled eyes or scoffs or profound disinterest or jokes in movies about supposed girl power where the explicitly and loudly feminist character says ridiculous things about how the word "semester" clearly invokes "semen."

and when it's really, really obvious, like when women are banned from even speaking to each other under certain regimes, it is of little note to the world.

also white queer people i need us all to understand that we are NOT the highest risk folks right now. check in on ur friends of color and your community and make sure people are alright. do what you can to protect people with the privilege you have. it may not be a lot, but every little bit helps, and it's better than catastrophizing.
