hey i’m sorry for bothering you with this question but i can’t remember where i read this scene… it’s one where remy is in jean-luc’s study after he k*lled belladonna’s brother; jean-luc is very mad breaking the news to remy he’s being exiled. then remy asks what he would do if he couldn’t find a way to survive — something like that — and jean-luc replies something along the lines of “then my son… you steal from faith”. i thought it was from HOC trilogy but i can’t find it! maybe it’s in coda? (i’ll definitely reread everything when i have the time)

Okay, I had to check this one too! It's in chapter 20 of Arrow of Time, The Reconciliation. It's on p. 347 of the print version. And the quote is 'you steal from fate'. Which is... I know I got that from somewhere, but I can't remember where. Was it from Gambit (1999)? Or from X-Treme X-Men? For the life of me, I can't remember now. Anyway, I think Remy says to Rogue, 'Let's steal another one from fate', and I took the line from there, but it all escapes me now. 🤔

And can I just say how wonderful it is that you connected with all Remy's childhood moments, the ones with his father. I'm so happy they resonated with you. I have ... thoughts and feelings about father/child relationships. They always touch me in some way. Glad you felt the same way too, through my words. 🫶🏼

I recognized that quote immediately, so I just had to look it up.

It's from X-Men: Legacy #265. One of my favourite panels ever.

Ah, thanks! Yes, that's the one! Nice sleuthing! 🕵🏻‍♂️

They Call Me Rogue

✒️Written for Rogue/Gambit Week 2024's Day 5 prompt - Noir AU. ✒️

She was awoken from a deep and troubled slumber by the sound of a carburettor popping on the street outside. Night had fallen, and neon lights were fizzing right outside her bedroom window; daytime was a distant memory, and now was the time that people like her came out to play.

God – this schtick was getting to be far too much. Lord knew some days she woke up not even recognising herself anymore, when she found it difficult to put a name to the face in the mirror.

She sat up anyhow, yawned and stretched.

“Crazy dreams,” she muttered to herself. “Last thing I need now.”

Yet still she couldn’t help but steal a glance at the space in the bed beside her, the one that hadn’t been filled in a long time. Sure, she had her kicks now and then, but they were mostly cold-hearted and calculating affairs that didn’t really count. She didn’t dream about men much; but recently she had been, in ways that made her blush. And she didn’t blush very often at all.

She got up and had a cold shower – not because she needed it, but because it was the best this seedy hotel had to offer. Then she dressed in camisole, garters, and laddered stockings, and sat on the bed, emptying out her purse contents as she did so.

Three driver’s licenses, two passports, and a chequebook.

Her hand hovered over the pile as if casting some form of divination, before she settled upon a license. For a moment she scrutinised the piece of paper before nodding firmly to herself – standing, she went to her suitcase, unclasped the leather straps, and threw it open not so much with a flourish as a dismissive flick of the wrist. A cloud of dust rose with a poof like mountain ash, glittering in a nearby shaft of neon-tinged moonlight. Inside was only slim pickings – she’d living hand to mouth the past couple of weeks, and while she considered walking the streets beneath her, circumstances had got so dire that she’d almost entertained it. No, no, no. Lying low was a necessity, not sinking low. Besides, now she had means again. And she’d waited long enough or the trail to go cold. Time to move on, like her momma had always told her to.

She finally decided on the grey suit – a tad shabby, but she hadn’t worn it much and no one would recognise her in it. Once dressed, she pinned on her hat and slipped on her little tan kid gloves. The pistol she slipped into her purse.

Then she hurried off into a sultry New York night.

Anna's evening dress from my Rogue and Gambit fanfic, 'The Tailor & The Seamstress'.

"It was a two-piece affair, the kind of ensemble he knew her to be most comfortable in. Delicately draped blonde lace, over a red jacket blouse, with a generous peplum, made up the bodice; a tiered skirt in crimson crepe silk made a striking contrast with the pallid hue of the lace." -Chapter 8, Mandarin Ducks.

I didn't want to make it too fancy. Anna doesn't have a lot of money to spare, but she is rather ingenious with the resources she has. And the cast-offs she appropriates from Burford's. 😉

She wears this to the soiree where they first meet Selfridge.

Anna's dress from Chapter 5 of 'The Tailor & The Seamstress'.

"She was wearing a dress for him this time, a chic cotton cutwork lace concoction in pure white, embellished sparingly with carefully beaded embroidery in pearl and scarlet at the hem, sleeves and neckline. Her slender waist was cinched in by a sash of blood red satin. Where usually her hair was hidden under a kerchief, now it was tied up by a thin band of the same satin that adorned her waist. The textiles were mostly simple and cheap… yet elegantly and tastefully cut and constructed."

About the Taylor and Seamstress: do you think Anna ever designed a suit specially for Remy? My headcanon is that she eventually designed and made him a suit as a gift, a symbol of commitment or as a response to the next time he asks for her hand

Avatar

Oh yes, definitely! And I absolutely love your headcanon! 💖

I see them both working on each other's wedding clothes, and Anna takes a lot of pleasure from adding all these little flourishes that usually wouldn't see their way onto men's clothing of the time. It's a big society wedding, so they both conspire to make everyone gasp at how outrageously fashionable they both look 😁 And in normal circumstances, she absolutely adores making neckties for him.

Anyway, in the hypothetical sequel I've written in my head, they get married in a private civil wedding first, before the big public society wedding that Jean Luc demands they have, lol. It gains them quite a few customers. 😉

BY THE WAY!

Have you seen the underwear men used to wear in this period? It was completely unsexy, but look at this advert: 👀

Anyway, have a cute wedding illustration from the period, in lieu of the designs I may or may not one day make for their wedding clothes. 😭
