Fauns and Dryads performed the actual dancing, which was full of so many complicated steps and figures that dancers at first appeared to be moving randomly, and it took spectators some time to understand the dance. A ring of dwarves would circle round the dancers, throwing snowballs through them in such perfect time and with such perfect aim that, if all the dancers were in exactly the right places, no one would be hit. The Great Snow Dance was also a sort of game, because if a dancer was slightly off he would get a snowball in the face.

I’ve had this little animation as my after-work-project for some weeks! In the first Narnia book there is this scene where an old tired horse is given wings and renewed life energy, and the little illustration that came with it has stayed with me ever since!

the pevensies never getting to stay in narnia as long as they did that first time makes me crazyyyy like they had years. YEARS. and then they lost it and they got to go back but it was for a matter of days. days. just long enough to remember the things you lost. to find pieces of yourself again. and then they had to go, and peter and susan never got to go back. at least edmund and lucy were there for weeks aboard the dawn treader, even if it wasn't in narnia itself. probably it was more cruel than anything that susan and peter went back for hardly any time at all.

when you think about it no wonder they called lucy the valiant, and i don't mean because she went to war. i mean because after the wars were over, she was the one on the battlefield, cordial in hand, tending to the dead and dying. she was the one with so many lives in her hands. she was the one having to make the call about who was gravely injured enough to be healed and who would keep suffering. lucy the valiant. lucy of the fire flowers. lucy of the healing hands. the queen who walked among the dying and tried to bring them back to life. how much must that wear on a person? on a little girl?

really, do you think peter's decree not to carry it into battle often was to spare the cordial, or to spare his sister?

the entire concept of Aslan's How is just as tragic as the rest of Narnia in Prince Caspian btw. as tragic as Peter guiding them wrong because the land has changed since he last knew it by heart, and as Cair Paravel being in ruins around them. if anything it's more tragic. once this was a place of gathering and ceremony and sacrifice. of celebration and victory. once this stood atop a hill and you could see all the way to the very shore of the sea. and now they have buried it. they have turned that which was a victory of life itself into a tomb. and they have buried your story here too.

i think the thing that kills me most is if there was just the lion, the witch, and the wardrobe, narnia wouldn't feel like a tragedy. disregarding publication order, even if we still had magician's nephew and horse and his boy—even then it wouldn't feel so steeped in grief. it was a beautiful fairy tale, and yes there was war and heartache and near-loss and whatnot, but there was also joy. even when they left, it felt less like a loss and more like a homecoming. but from the very second book released, it becomes a tragedy. they lost themselves and they lost narnia and they're going to lose it again. for good. it will never be the same, and neither will they. and if you just stopped at the end of the first story, it would be fine. but how can you?

She had been a great lady, wise and gracious and happy, King Caspian's bride whom he had brought home from the eastern end of the world. And men said that the blood of the stars flowed in her veins.” - the silver chair, c.s. Lewis
