i think the thing that kills me most is if there was just the lion, the witch, and the wardrobe, narnia wouldn't feel like a tragedy. disregarding publication order, even if we still had magician's nephew and horse and his boy—even then it wouldn't feel so steeped in grief. it was a beautiful fairy tale, and yes there was war and heartache and near-loss and whatnot, but there was also joy. even when they left, it felt less like a loss and more like a homecoming. but from the very second book released, it becomes a tragedy. they lost themselves and they lost narnia and they're going to lose it again. for good. it will never be the same, and neither will they. and if you just stopped at the end of the first story, it would be fine. but how can you?
