artist in denial of being depressed: omg this 2 month long art block has been crazy... sorry i haven't updated any of my fics in a long while! it's just been super difficult to daydream! so weird that i've lost a little bit of passion for my current comfort character and ocs... this couldn't possibly have any implications or alternative explanations

people saying some variation to "oh no" in the notes of this post are very funny but at the same time. i wish you a very Feel Better

Perhaps the most difficult emotional burden for a Fanfic Writer:

  • The happiness and enthusiasm you feel while writing the fic you truly want to write, usually something self-indulgent, obscure, or involves OCs.
  • The disappointment and self-doubt that follows after you post that fic and receive little to no response/reaction to it.

This is no one's fault, it's simply the reality of writing fanfiction, but that might actually make it a little more depressing because there's really nothing you can do but make peace with it.

On a positive note: Send lots of hugs and appreciation to the one or few people who DO give your passion projects love! <3

I've been writing fanfics for 20 years and this happens every time I post a new story. I'll get a bunch of comments on the first chapter that usually say something like "This is a great start! Can't wait for more!" or "I can't wait to see what you have planned!" or "I'm excited to see what happens next!"

And then I post chapter 2... then chapter 3... then chapter 4, and so on...

And none of those people who told me they were so excited about my idea ever comment again. Like did you all die or what????? I'm pretty sure my writing quality didn't plunge after the first chapter but jeez.

My dream as a writer isn’t to get published and make a lot of money, it’s to have a fanbase devoted enough that I can post a story about a background character that had four lines or drop a piece of obscure lore and they go crazy over it

I think one of the kindest things you can do for people with various mental health struggles is just... let people back into your life after they've been absent for a while.

Making friends as an adult is so fucking hard already and isolating yourself from other people is a very common symptom of depression, anxiety, burnout, ocd, trauma, grief, etc. Which means that someone will do the hard work of recovery/healing and resurface back into a world where their previous friends have written them off because they stopped showing up.

So if you know someone where you're like "yeah we could have been better friends but they fell off the map a bit" and that person suddenly reaches out, or starts showing up to events even though you kind of forgot they were still in the group chat... well they may have been Going Through It and you don't actually have to punish them for their absence you can just be glad that they're back.
