Killua, July 7th, and the significance of his birthdate
This is one of those things that I thought was something most of the fandom had picked up on, but recently realized might not be the case. For people who watch A Lot of anime/read a lot of manga, you might be going “Jesus Dave why do you feel the need to make a post about something so obvious???” But not everyone has this knowledge that relies on an understanding of specific folklore and a related holiday! So let’s begin with a basic bit of information.
As it turns out, the main cast all have Significant Birthdays with a clear pattern to them. Most people know this part of it - that Leorio’s birthday is 3/3 and it goes onward from there with Kurapika - 4/4, Gon - 5/5, Hisoka - 6/6(/6), and then finally Killua - 7/7.
Hunter x Hunter 1999 - Favorite Scenery [Part 13/?]
My favorite animes are the ones who's fanart always ends up looking like either a tarot card or a religious oil painting made in the late 1400s
when yuzu wrote nagareboshi kirari with lyrics like “our meeting, crossing time, is like a dream / feelings, so many that i can’t hide them, dance in the wind / if only i had a little more courage” did they know that gay people all over the world would be emotionally ruined by it
when they wrote “one instant of light, please convey these feelings / i’ll find things i can do for your sake” did they have any idea…
Do y'all think that Leorio and Kurapika, who both tragically lost their childhood best friends in traumatizing ways, ever watch Killua and Gon being goofy kids together and have some complex, gut-wrenching feelings about it?
Cause I do.
ok but like…. gon probably knows that killua’s feelings for him cross the best friends line
gon is VERY perceptive of his and killua’s dynamic and it’s seen a few times in the manga
(this happens in chapter 231 after a very distressed Killua yells at Gon to not make a move until he comes back from stopping the selection)
Gon KNOWS Killua better than anyone, and he’s very perceptive of the small changes in Killua’s behavior, instantly noticing when Killua is acting weird.
So right after the “gon you are light” scene, where Killua’s devotion and love are reinforced, I really feel like Gon knows and noticed the change.
Sadly, at this precise moment of the story, Gon is emotionally unavailable. As he told Palm, at this point, he only wants to get stronger so he can get Kite back. That’s all he cares about. All of this situation was his mess, and he has to fix it no matter the cost.
He loves Killua a lot and is really, really glad that he’s by his side at this moment, but he just has no time to think about the subtle changes in Killua’s behavior. There’s no way that at this point of the story he can explore his feelings further, because he’s only focused on this one task at hand : saving Kite.
The only thing Gon’s mental state allows him to do at this point is push all these thoughts in the back of his mind, to deal with it later on.
But I think his realization that Killua’s feelings for him have deepened have led Gon to make the decisions he made in CAA. Gon has always been protective of Killua, bursting into the Zoldyck Mansion to get him back or getting extremely pissed when Razor almost kills him. He knows Killua would do anything for him, and if he noticed that Killua is acting even more devoted to him, he’d know it’d be Killua’s downfall. He knows Killua would give his life away in a heartbeat for his sake, and he doesn’t want that.
Imo, if Gon truly noticed that change in Killua, then it’s another reason as to why he pushed him away in the whole Pitou situation. Gon pushing Killua away would be him telling him “I know how you feel about me, but I can’t let you hurt yourself for my sake”. Which would make everything even more tragic, because it’d be Gon basically acknowledging Killua’s feelings towards him, while Killua thinks he’s rejecting them.
Even though Gon is emotionally unavailable because he’s dealing with grief and loss at this moment, I think he noticed those subtle changes in Killua’s behavior and the only thing he can do right now is push Killua away to protect him until he can figure everything out.
Gon being emotionally unavailable does not mean that he doesn’t reciprocate Killua’s feelings. It just means he’s unable to think about anything other than saving Kite at this point of the story. He loves him a lot, and that’s why he’s pushing him away, that’s why he’s taking everything onto his shoulders so Killua doesn’t have to deal with it.
Which is why I believe that this separation is the perfect occasion for Gon to face the feelings he couldn’t confront before. Along with the “something more important than the thing you’re hunting could be right there by the side of the road”, I feel like this will push Gon to explore his feelings further and analyze the dynamic change between him and Killua.
I’m hopeful that Gon knows how Killua feels about him, and that this time apart from him will make him realize that he reciprocates those feelings.
the thing is.. gon always planned on telling killua to stay out of his fight with pitou. that was always part of his plan because he already knew it was going to be a suicide mission and, in his words, he’s allowed to die, but killua’s not. killua was never going to be included regardless of whether or not he remained calm, regardless of whether or not his words caused gon to lash out at him in rage, and it’s not because gon doesn’t care about him or value him, but the exact opposite. pushing killua away wasn’t him saying, “i don’t care about you therefore my problems aren’t any of your concern.” it was him saying, “because i care about you, i won’t let my problems be yours.”
ever since i made the connection w/ the birth month flower meanings i have not stopped thinking about it :-)
last quick drawing of this year b4 twenty twenty four :,)
Who do you think fall for the other first, killua or Gon ? :D
i realize this might be a Highly Controversial Take, but i think gon fell in love first. namely, i think gon fell in love during the hunter exam, and killua fell in love right at the end of the testing gate arc. initially i was just going to leave it at that & say that this is my personal headcanon simply because i just happen to vibe with it, but then i got in the shower & started thinking about it & realized that there are actually quite a few reasons i hold this view. so it’s meta time!!!!!! because this is MY blog with MY rules & i can ramble about killugon to my heart’s content & no one can stop me.
1. why i don’t think killua was in love with gon prior to the testing gate arc
my main evidence for this is killua’s reaction to gon’s fight with hanzo. hanzo beats the living daylights out of gon during that fight & basically everyone watching is absolutely horrified. except, quite notably, killua. (okay, and maybe, like, hisoka, but hisoka being weird more or less goes without saying). leorio & kurapika are ready to THROW HANDS when hanzo breaks gon’s arm. kurapika’s eyes go scarlet, which is one of the very very few times in the anime we see that happen due to a situation not related to the kurta massacre. so there’s absolutely no mistaking that gon getting beaten to a pulp is supposed to be extremely disturbing to everyone witnessing it.
now killua, on the other hand, watches all of this go down with relatively little emotional investment. he solely watches the fight through an analytical lens. he’s still bitter that gon was ranked higher than he was in the tournament, and his reaction to hanzo’s first concussion-inducing blow is to get irritated, because he would’ve been able to dodge that, so his ranking should’ve been better than gon’s. unlike kurapika & leorio, he has absolutely no intention of intervening after hanzo breaks gon’s arm. very little about this situation disturbs him in the slightest.
this is in no way throwing shade at killua. it’s absolutely and completely clear why he can take such a dispassionate view of that fight--he was raised in an environment in which mercilessly beating children is just business as usual. but if we contrast his relatively neutral view of gon’s fight with hanzo with how angry he gets after gon gets injured in his fight with gido in heaven’s arena, it’s very clear that something changed in the time between those two encounters.
2. why i do think gon was in love with killua from the hunter exam
in short, the testing gate arc. now ostensibly, the testing gate arc is about killua and the dynamics of the zoldyck family, but in my opinion, it’s actually far more about gon. namely, it’s about gon’s complete devotion to killua, and his willingness to risk his life in order to be with him. the plot of the testing gate arc is overwhelmingly driven by one singular factor--gon’s insistence that he wants to see killua again. gon watches two men /literally/ get chewed up and spit out by mike after they trespass onto the zoldyck’s property, and his immediate response is to... try to trespass onto the zoldyck’s property. he lets canary beat the living hell out of him, and his constant refrain, as he keeps getting hit again & again, is just that he wants to see killua. everyone points to killua’s complete devotion to gon as a proof of killua’s feelings, but they seem to overlook the fact that there is an arc in which the plot is literally just “gon will endure any amount of cruelty and pain and danger just for the slightest chance of seeing killua again.”
3. why i think the testing gate arc was the game changer for killua
i’m sorry--it all comes back to the testing gate arc. those episodes are some of my all time favorites of the entire series, so you’ve gotta listen to me talk about them for just a bit longer. my evidence for this claim is two-fold.
the first piece of evidence is the change we see in killua’s behavior between the hunter exam and heaven’s arena. the fandom loves to joke that killua willingly accepted gon’s compliments during the hunter exam, but then a switch flipped & he’s suddenly all bashful about it in heaven’s arena. hmm, i wonder what that switch could possibly be... it’s actually at the very very start of the heaven’s arena arc when we see this change. killua is doing that little bit where he shows the difference in power between hisoka, hanzo, gon, and himself, and gon tells him that he’s amazing. immediately, killua gets incredibly startled and embarrassed--he literally jumps and quickly goes bright red (rewatch that scene if you don’t know what i’m talking about because it’s extremely precious). clearly something changed between the exam and heaven’s arena to make killua suddenly get overwhelmed and shy when gon praises him. and there is really only one thing that happened between those two arcs--the testing gate.
my second piece of evidence for this claim involves a lot more extrapolation/personal opinion than the very textually based argument i’ve made so far, but it’s my sleepover so i get to pick the headcanon. more or less, i think the testing gate was the first time anyone ever truly went out of their way for killua. he’s grown up with no friends and an incredibly abusive and toxic family. no one has ever stuck their neck out for him or made a sacrifice for him. and suddenly he sees that gon, a twelve year old kid with no combat training thus far, willingly challenged the single most dangerous family in the world simply to see him again. he sees gon’s busted up face and understands that gon was willing to suffer pain and violence and danger just for a chance to be with him. when in killua’s life has anyone ever tried to protect him? when in killua’s life has anyone been willing to suffer anything for him? the testing gate arc is a real turning point in gon & killua’s relationship in a much bigger way than i think a lot of us realize.
so that’s it. that’s my Piping Hot Take about why gon was actually in love with killua first. i know that the fandom as a whole seems to favor the opinion that killua was the first one to develop feelings, and everyone is absolutely entitled to their own perspective. the beautiful thing about fandom is that we all see these characters & stories through a slightly different lens, so i don’t think whatsoever that my perspective is the only correct one. i really just had a very very long shower and too much time to think ;)
what am i worth
