Y’all, I just got an email alert about a new chapter on a story I follow. Here’s the author’s note for that chapter. 😂
This is the most validating post.

2019 mood: absolutely zero shame in re-reading your own fics and saying “This was good. This was a good thing I did, I’m proud of myself and I’m a good writer”
the kissing booth is like a really bad fanfiction

Formatting your Manuscript
If you’re planning on one day turning your manuscript in to literary agents and publishing houses, you need to make sure it’s formatted correctly. In many cases, your manuscript will be skipped over if it isn’t done to industry standard, so here’s the basics that you’ll need if you don’t want to be ignored. Before I get started, please know that this is aimed specifically at fiction manuscripts. If you’re writing non-fiction or a memoir, the expectations will be different, so it would be wise to Google what you need.
The Basics
The Title Page
The Next Pages
The Chapters
Page Numbers
For the most part, this is the most important of what you’ll need to know for formatting your manuscript. I used this video as reference, so I’m trusting everything it says is true because it was made by an author who has several novels published, and because it was uploaded this year, it should be up to date.
But just remember, whenever you go to turn in a manuscript, make sure you check the website of the agent or publisher you’re trying to contact. They might have specifications that differ with the ones stated in this video, and you should always do whatever you can to abide by what they want.
Reblogging aggressively. Some publishers will throw your manuscript into the slush pile or, worse, the trash if you don’t follow their desired format. Spec fic publishers are especially strict about manuscript formatting.
Also reblogging aggressively.
“This is your daily, friendly reminder to use commas instead of periods during the dialogue of your story,” she said with a smile.
“Unless you are following the dialogue with an action and not a dialogue tag.” He took a deep breath and sat back down after making the clarifying statement.
“However,” she added, shifting in her seat, “it’s appropriate to use a comma if there’s action in the middle of a sentence.”
“True.” She glanced at the others. “You can also end with a period if you include an action between two separate statements.”
Things I didn’t know
“And–” she waved a pen as though to underline her statement–“if you’re interrupting a sentence with an action, you need to type two hyphens to make an en-dash.”
You guys have no idea how many students in my advanced fiction workshop didn’t know any of this when writing their stories.
Reblog to save a life
I love how easy it can be to learn stuff like this through tumblr and not through school.
What fanfic is this omfg
Someone write it.
important ship tropes:
Emma and Killian are best friends and sleep together and right before he goes on tour. She gets pregnant and doesn’t talk to him for a long time. He announces his baby and wife on twitter or something. Please someone know what I’m talking about!
Yes, I love the David/Killian best friends/Emma is the little sister or Emma/Ruby best friends and Killian’s the older brother.
But I really, really want this other version where Killian is the younger brother pining for his older brother’s best friend, wondering forever if there is something more between Liam and Emma, but also hoping that there isn’t and that maybe his big brother’s best friend might look at the little brother as someone more.
And then, Emma does start to show a little interest in Killian, And then they start secretly dating because Killian doesn’t know if Liam actually does love Emma more than a friend, or if he would even approve of Killian to be the boyfriend of Emma.
Is there something like this?
(Or is someone willing to write this if there isn’t?)
fanfiction is just basically the same people falling in love with each others in 20000 different ways why am i this obsessed
I’m always curious if relatively newer people to fandom know about older fic written before they showed up (or if they give a shit). I feel like I see fic rec lists with mostly newer stuff. Is it a matter of not having time to read more than what shows up across their dash, or if they don’t feel like digging around, or was the older stuff just not as interesting? Also do they only read older stuff of writers still posting because they remain relevant?
Thanks to those who weighed in.if anyone else wants to give me their .02, I’d love to hear it.
IMO, some of the best fics are from “back in the day”, e.g. The Lost Boys, A One Time Thing (and Other Untruths), and Put Me In Coach, I’m Ready to Play. I’ve found current popular fics have very similar storylines as these three (and might be even inspired by them).
