i’ve been thinking about the Iron Man suit as a coffin recently (shoutout to @soliloquent-stark for that one) and i can’t stop thinking of how the iron man suit truly is not armor. It is not designed to protect the life of the person inside it. It is intended to prolong the life of the person inside it until the correct time.
It’s not armor. It takes the preference of the wearer into account. When tony needed some part of his exposed, when tony needed to die, whenever tony needed it to fly directly towards certain death, it obeyed. the suit did not protect the life inside of it. The suit escorted the body inside towards the end. It simply made sure that tony got to the death he needed, wanted, rather than meeting a death he didn’t plan for.
The iron man suit was, in fact, a high tech prosthesis. It helped Tony deal with his terror that he would die an unexpected death and leave the world defenseless. The suit helped ensure he would be there, to sacrifice himself, when he needed to be.
Robert Downey Jr, from his Off Camera interview:
i think what irks me most about the way people, in canon AND fandom, treat tony stark is that they fully ignore his motivations and the communication he’s doing through his behavior. behavior IS communication, and yet everyone around tony ignores all of his desperate attempts to reach out for help bc he never explicitly directly says “im scared, i need help, something wrong”. like, so many actions are rooted in his fear of everything around him but they become seen as egotistical just people people think he’s doing them to put himself on a pedestal, rather than to keep himself vigilant.
anyways if i read any more Avengers fics in which Tony Stark wears sunglasses indoors “because it’s cool” without any other allusion to his paranoia or health problems, im moving to jupiter
like just trying to cope with the fact that tony stark dies this month
do y’all have some iron man comic recs. I just need SOMETHING. I’ve already read every solo series issue from 1992-2020 and…..I wanna say Fatal Frontier as well and Demon in a Bottle and then like the civil wars or whatever but we don’t need to talk about those.
IRON MAN NATION PLEASE SHOW UP FOR ME do you have any hidden gems or favorite classic arcs that I should seek out. please help
I'm just gonna say it again real quick:
Yes!! Iron Man is a tragedy! It has and always has been since the very first appearance in 1963 which describes itself, Tony's life, and legacy, as such.
Tony causes most of his issues himself, he is his biggest villain, a majority of his rogues gallery are caricatures of the worst versions of himself brought to life (when they're not just being racist cuz...60s...). The worst thing about being Tony Stark is that he can't stop being Tony Stark (he tried!!) That is the point.
The majority of pain Tony goes through, is pain he inflicts on himself, whether intentionally or inadvertently. That is the point.
He is not A villain (at least. Not usually. There are...some rough moments and arcs that are. Not great. As there is with any character as old as he is). But he is his own main antagonist.
every year I start iron man 3 on december 31st and let it play into january 1st so that it’s the last and first thing I do in a year. this is now six years going strong. infinity sagas come and go but tony stark is forever
Bruce Banner and Tony Stark have such beautiful friendship and I'm just tearing up everytime I see Bruce being sad about Tony in She-Hulk Ep 1.
Tony (to Bruce when they first meet): Finally someone who speaks English.
AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON (2015) / SHE-HULK: ATTORNEY AT LAW (2022)
no because i don't even care about marvel anymore but immediately upon hearing about the she-hulk ep i was nearly in tears i was Emotional.... i am still so damn attached to Him like
the clown makeup is literally never coming off. i am bound by contract to cry over tony stark it’s not my choice anymore
imagining tony and bruce feeling like they finally get to take a breath when they see each other after the blip. imagining how relieved they would have felt to be in the presence of a trusted friend. I think they would have a unique and valuable dynamic since bruce wasn’t involved in civil war. there’s a lot of shared experience between them without the trauma and tension of the avengers break-up hanging in the air. imagining them feeling like they can let go just a bit while they’re together, just getting to build something and do some science and maybe relax on the beach in between. imagining them laughing as they carve their initials into the bar. imagining them feeling safe in a way that only happens with an old friend who gets you in a period of life where feeling safe and relaxed was hard to come by.
The fact that Tony made sure to reach out to Bruce and help him in a hard time. Just so that there’d be at least once person checking in on him, making sure he’s okay, cutting through the loneliness, even if just a little. The fact that Tony did so even though he himself would have been going through a hard time, and that may have even been the very thing that prompted him to reach out. Being aware of his own struggle may have made him think of a friend who might have been struggling, too. And Tony knows that he would want a friend in a hard time, so maybe he decided he’d make sure to be that for Bruce. But also the fact that he trusts this to not be a one-way thing, and he trusts that Bruce will naturally be a friend to him in a time of need, too. So he shows up for Bruce, helps him build a facility, gives him some company, but at the same time Bruce shows up for him, and lets Tony rant about whatever’s on his mind. Like. They. Carved. Their. Initials. Into. The. Bar.
cannot believe that She-Hulk got me in my Tony Stark feelings in the year 2022. that was an act of malice. my clown makeup will never come off
respond to this ask with a pic of Tony being cute
oh certainly!
and for good measure, this classic:
