…for who could ever learn to love a Beast?
𝐁𝐄𝐀𝐔𝐓𝐘 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐁𝐄𝐀𝐒𝐓 1991 › dir. Gary Trousdale & Kirk Wise
This scene alone ought to prove that Belle is not a weak woman. Her father is imprisoned and sick, and the Beast is refusing to let him go. She doesn’t fight, she doesn’t yell or scream; she does something far more noble and brave: she offers herself in her father’s place. She’s effectively giving her own life to save her father - not by dying in his place, but she’s giving up her freedom and her life outside the castle. All so her dad can have a chance at surviving. Yes, she’s scared of the Beast, but she musters up her courage again and gives her word that she will remain with him forever, as long as her father can go free. Yes, she puts her head in her hands and falls to her knees - wouldn’t you, if you were at the mercy of a monster, whom you didn’t know for sure was going to let you live? But she doesn’t change her mind (barring the scene in the West Wing later on). She stays with the Beast, and the fact that she stands up to him only gives him incentive to give her a room and treat her more like a guest, not a prisoner. Belle is not weak in any sense!
Bravo, my friend! Bravo! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I think that no one, much less a young woman, has ever stood up to the Beast or made such a sacrifice in his presence, and those two things leave him intrigued by her. This is especially since Belle’s sacrifice shows her love for her father, which undoubtedly touched the Beast a little bit, sparking the amount of humanity that was still within him. Her standing up to him stunned the Beast, but Belle’s continuance in doing so helped him learn to respect her and treat her as an equal, rather than as someone being below him. And while Belle was frightened by the Beast’s appearance at first, it didn’t make her judge him for it. His temper and impatience, yes, but not his looks. And since Belle never judged him for his looks, it helped the Beast to come around and change for the better. Belle brought out the best in the Beast, and that’s what saved him, not just from his curse, but from himself.
Compare to this to Belle standing up to Gaston. Gaston is stunned every time Belle stands up to him, which is almost always because she is rebuffing and fighting back against his advances on her. And because Belle standing up to him makes her look superior or equal to him, it pisses Gaston off since he thinks women are supposed to be meek, subservient, and inferior to men in every way. Gaston had every opportunity to learn from Belle and change his ways, but unlike the Beast, he’s just too set in his toxic masculine and narcissistic ways to improve himself. Luckily the Beast realized that Gaston was the very person he could have become had it not been for Belle, and wanted to the better man as he could possibly be.
And thanks to Belle, he was, allowing her to find the man of her dreams. 😉😊😁❤️

if he could learn to love another and earn her love in return, by the time the last petal fell, then, the spell will be broken.
Ashamed of his monstrous form, the beast concealed himself inside his castle, with a magic mirror as his only window to the outside world. The rose she had offered was truly an enchanted rose, which would bloom until his 21st year.
If he could learn to love another, and earn her love in return by the time the last petal fell, then the spell would be broken. If not, he would be doomed to remain a beast for all time. As the years passed, he fell into despair and lost all hope. For who could ever learn to love a beast?
