So to be fair as an Asian-American I don't see this as they did it because he was Asian, Abraham looks exactly what you'd expect as an American white boy and he had as gruesome of a death as Glenn. Hershel was white and he got beheaded and Beth got a bullet through her head. This is a gruesome show. But the Walking Dead has brought so many poc and also represents the LGBT community. I think theyve done a great job at representing all types of humans.

7 seasons, 12 dead black characters, 6 dead women (2 of them lesbians) and now the only Asian American character dead.

So that’s 19 dead minorities in 7 seasons-and these are the characters who had speaking parts and were not just background characters.

That fine if you enjoy the show and you think it’s all fair game because the show is about a zombie apocalypse. But I’m talking about a larger problem where showrunners fall into a pattern of killing minority characters because they would rather do that then kill off a white main character, no matter how much more narrative sense it would make.

And it’s just really telling that white fans especially get really heated and vehemently deny racist patterns in fandoms whenever you point out the bigger picture. I’m not saying Glenn was killed just because he was Asian, I’m saying his death very well could have been changed and the show could’ve taken creative liberties (as it had done in the past) but the showrunners have already fallen into these tropes of killing minorities and the fandom is already accustomed to it-so why try to be creative and take your show in a different direction when you can just play it safe and claim ‘comic book canon’ when people express their grievances?

And I just think it’s really funny that people are really really REALLY invested in comic book canon all of a sudden when it pertains to Glenn’s death and how people shouldn’t be upset, especially considering that Daryl isn’t even in the comics at all and they’ve simultaneously come up with a hundred reasons why it’s fine for him to still be alive after 7 seasons and how his death in particular would make people stop watching because of his ‘huge fanbase’

Which brings me back to my original point. Fandom will always cape for white male characters no matter what and justify deaths of characters of color. Showrunners absolutely count on it, especially the walking dead showrunners. This isn’t new but I’m un surprised people are so upset that I’m pointing this out.

Maybe it will help people to think about it like this: The cloak of invincibility on TWD, especially from the fan POV, is for white characters only. White characters die, yeah, but the one character no one thinks will ever die because it would supposedly ruin the show and no one would watch anymore is a white guy, followed by another white guy who is actually meant to be the protagonist.

Folks will say, well, Michonne is invincible (NOW they’ll say it to argue that race had nothing to do with Glenn’s death), but of course half the fans were gleefully predicting that Michonne was doomed, DOOMED all summer, while Daryl theories were treated as crack theories. I like to think she is, from Gimple’s POV, but she definitely is not to the fandom. Morgan? He was introduced in episode 1 and is still going – but he didn’t become a regular until – what, season 5? So he’s seen as sort of an outsider still.

Speaking of Morgan, imagine if it were Morgan instead of Daryl who punched Negan in that scene. No 75% of the fandom would be saying it wasn’t his fault and feeling bad for him.

The kicker is, Daryl took over aspects of Glenn’s relationship with Rick, aspects that have given him more screen time (Glenn having been Rick’s “right hand” in the comic), but when it came to the “iconic” death, Glenn got to keep that. Or, to be more accurate, as several fans have noted, Abe got Glenn’s death, Glenn got bludgeoned to feed Daryl’s story.

There is no narrative reason for Daryl to be untouchable on a show where no one is supposed to be safe.

Yes.

I'm pissed that man baby Daryl can do anything and not face any consequences. Punches Negan, and Glenn (and Maggie) suffer for it?! Goes after Dwight and gets a bunch of them wrapped up in his bs and captured?!  Plus i'm positive Beth (who I didn't care about that much but still) was killed to further his man pain. Burning himself with cigarettes and shit like what.

Norman has a restaurant in town fgs! Clearly he ain't going nowhere for a while. He's invincible because these stans love him so much and AMC is afraid of losing ratings if they kill him.

And Sasha! My poor Sasha. No one is talking about her loss. Every time she loves, she loses! Bob, her brother, and now Abe. That peace sign he gave her before he died broke my heart.

And even after all this bs, I do hope we see Sasha and Maggie become a bff power-team. After losing their siblings they were growing much closer and i’d like to continue; her insisting on bringing her to hilltop gave me hope.

I wouldn't mind seeing Rosita and Tara be together at all either. Lots of Richonne + mamachonne comforting moments. Eugune to make the bullets that help defeat Negan..I just want all the babies to grow from this and be stronger than they ever were, leading communities and raining hell on their enemies.

The Trope of Black Women’s Elevated Status Romantically and Socially in Zombie/Survivalist Settings

So, this bit of meta has been knocking around in my head for quite a while.

I’ve been a huge fan of the zombie genre for a looong time.

Before I even jump into this, I think it’s important to note, that basically the beginning of the modern iteration of this genre Night of the Living Dead and subsequently Dawn of the Dead, used it to upend social taboos for black men and make very risky, and even to this day super-relevant on-the-nose statements about black men in America.

In 1968′s Night of the Living Dead:

  • a black man leads
  • punches a white man
  • slaps a white woman
  • is the last person standing
  • and eventually the movie ends in such a way that remains very much spot-on resonant, then and even now, regarding today’s Black Lives Matter movement

***this movie is available to watch for free on youtube. anyone with any interest in social metaphors about black people on film needs to make it their mission to watch this movie at least once.***

I think that it’s important to note that the dawn of the modern zombie genre began with breaking HUGE racial taboos.

Now, with this background, I want to talk about one particularly interesting pattern to ponder regarding black women’s presence within the zombie genre.

I’ve noticed that within the zombie genre (and by extension survival/apocalyptic “last people” scenarios), black women go from being virtually invisible in a romantic sense in “normal narratives” to being the top pick as a partner in all respects in these scenarios.

The first example I can remember was in 1971′s The Omega Man, starring Charlton Heston and Rosalind Cash, an early adaptation of Richard Matheson’s I Am Legend, and potentially the instigator in the trend:

Both characters are the last humans alive, tough and able to defend themselves in this harsh world populated by a new other (humanoid vampire-like species which shuns light).  And eventually they become romantic partners.

This is noteworthy, as this movie predates the height of the blaxploitation era, coming right at the heels of the apex of the Civil Rights Movement.

I’ve thought a lot about this trend. The zombie genre is built on social commentary – it has never been just about the monsters. Still, how did it get to be so Black woman-centric?

I do think the rise of this trend came in the most part from the underrunning belief that black women are the only type of woman who is “made for” this kind of scenario, as SBWs for better and for worse.

That’s something to think about. And tbqh, I think that’s probably the case for Robert Kirkman’s Michonne (but not Scott Gimple’s).

Selena (like Ben in NotLD) was never written as Black. The top 2 picks to play her were Naomie Harris and a white actress whose name escapes me. (It’s all in Danny Boyle’s commentary). He didn’t change anything but maybe one or two lines of Mitchell’s, but I think Mitchell’s part where he claims “the black one” and describes how he plans to rape her became racial commentary as much as a smack at the patriarchy.

Z Nation did what The Walking Dead didn’t at the time it started – it made Roberta Warren the lead. I’m behind on it, but I don’t really find Roberta to be a SBW trope unsubverted. SBW as a media trope aren’t desirable, that is kind of fundamental.

My theory is that zombie media likes to revisit the idea that once society’s gone, social constructs fade out. To keep it short, basically the only thing keeping Black women from being the standard of beauty and desirability is society.

So

TWO black dudes getting gruesome deaths on Fear The Walking Dead….

1) Dude getting his face eaten off….

2) Calvin, the drug dealer, getting run over… TWICE..

And ONE Black dude (the daughter’s boyfriend) is obviously dead too…

ETA: I don’t want to see no shit about a goddamn thing, since we ALL know The Walking Dead has an issue with disproportionately killing off Black male characters.

- Merle - Shane - Lori - Hershel - Beth - Dale - Sophia - Andrea - Lizzy - Mika

And countless other white characters have been killed.

So kindly shut the fuck up and go somewhere else with your hate-inducing shit.

The white characters are already disproportionately represented on TWD for a show set for multiple seasons in Metro Atlanta. White characters are already over represented all over TV, so killing them off is nothing.

But when you have limited number of black male characters (AND black female characters in this universe) and then killing them off in decidedly gruesome ways (Noah) or sacrificing themselves for white characters (T-Dog) or killing one off a few episodes after a new one arrives,  it’s noticeably obvious that black males die a lot quicker, more gruesome, and for shock value.

I would like to share with you this text, contains important thoughts about Michonne. And recommend to follow this new blog.

“In a recent episode, she volunteered to go on a dangerous mission in place of Glenn. It was implied that she felt it would be better for her to risk being killed because she didn’t have anyone that would miss her, unlike Glenn. That was a very disturbing revelation for Michonne fans.

This is all problematic writing for a dark skinned black female character. Michonne is a beautiful woman, but she hasn’t once been shown in a desirable light. Carol has been openly flirted with several times. Sasha, a light-skinned black woman, has been flirted with and had relationships. Tara, a woman who isn’t even interested in men, has been hit on and has had love interests. Rosita and Maggie have lovers. And Michonne…has her sword?

That leaves our lonely samurai to continue to look out for herself because no one (love interest or not) is going to express any concern for her.

The new character bio that AMC presents on their website for Michonne this season talks about love. She loves people and she is loved back, is what it says in short.

To that I say, no. “

Is anyone else nearly done with the walking dead

There's been a notable dive in the story writing, becoming more prominent near the end of season 5 and manifesting to gaping proportions in season 6.

From the frail story lines and character arc they run with then drop, to the lack of interactions between people in the group. (I want to see conversation! Friendships! Romance! Hell, sex!)

On that note, the lack of interactions between their best relationships in the show (ex: I was liking Maggie x Sasha bonding over sibling deaths, and I still mourn dixonne) but ultimately Michonne and Carl.. Though I'm actually not tripping too much about it since it would just further the borderline mammy role she's been playing and now would full-on be playing if she continues to take care of Rick's white ass kids as he goes after the pretty white blonde woman.

But yeah, the most prominent fuck up of this show is the lack of Michonne.

Like, where is she?! Why can I count the lines she's gotten this season on one hand? Why are they sidelining a most if not the most beloved character for boring non-drama and parched story lines?

It's bad enough relegating her to mammy, and connecting her with Rick only to be the desexed loyal solider at his side and not the beautiful fierce woman she is. Bad enough they continue to downplay her beauty and presence, keeping her on dark porches in frumpy clothes, emptying out her characterization to make it all about supporting Rick and her frustrations with her sword and humanity. And now we hardly even see her. I want to see her.

Though to be fair Daryl is getting the same treatment, also suffering from a reduction of personality and individuality...

And honorable mention to how they're holding Glenn’s potential death over our heads like it's a game they're playing to keep us staying tuned when really it's just frustrating and amateur.

I mean, I get the season isn't over but I frankly don't trust the writers. Not to fix the damage they've made, not to even recognize that there is damage.

The fact that they block anyone on Twitter who brings up concerns about Michonne no matter how polite one asks about her (a couple of writers have done this, including Gimple)...that is enough to show me they don't give a damn resting on their fat ratings to do what they please, which are actually on the decline (so ha!)

Because I do hope they continue to decline. Because I'm definitely getting over the show, ready to let it go.

okay so like question how is rick talkin bout those ASZ people being weak and sheltered but didn't he take in all those woodbury folk...who were also weak and sheltered?! and how much did he train them to be survivors... like a lot of um had to be towed away on the bus and they were getting takin out left and right when shit went sour after phineas and ferb went walker. so i'm like...just tryna figure out what the difference is here in these people vs. the alexandria that Rick thinks he needs to kill a few to make a point.

Avatar

Has anyone noticed...

How there's a drastic difference between how Michonne is treated when it comes to physical confrontation vs..like, anyone else? How she’s been clobbered and manhandled, not to mention never recognized for her beauty and desirability?

  • So the governor fought and wrestled her
  • Merle hunted and shot her
  • Rick pulled his gun on her more than once + stuffed his finger in her bullet wound
  • Daryl aimed his crossbow at her head
  • Merle knocked her out (to deliver as a human trade despite all she'd done for them so far)
  • The governor set up a human torture chamber meant to physically and sexually assault her
  • Even Aaron knocked her on her ass a few episodes ago.

Everyone just beats on her but I guess she's so STRONG she can take it!

Then there's the matter of recognizing her beauty and worth and attractiveness. Rick literally doesn't count to me anymore since he's decided a woman he's met in 2 seconds is worth kissing more than the woman who saved his life and his children’s.

She had Daryl’s friendship for like 3 episodes then they literally just dropped it. Her closest relationship besides Rick is a child and that's really uncool. Some mammy mess for real now, considering Rick would rather be with white women than her (especially worse if she's living with them but gets no romance of her own like this is disgusting to me). Anyhow, every other woman has been shown to be attractive, is cared for, and has had at least romantic interest shown in them. I might be missing someone, but observe:

  • Lori - Rick... and Shane...
  • Andrea - Close companionship with Dale, Got it in with Shane, Had relationship with the Governor
  • Carol - Has a close companionship with Daryl who cares and protects her, has been shown interest by Axel and ole dude in the gun house
  • Maggie - In relationship with Glenn
  • Beth - Dated random blond boy, dated whoever that kid was who died on the run, had ??? with Daryl, had some cute friendshipy thing with Noah
  • Karen - Had relationship with Tyreese
  • Tara - Had a girlfriend, Eugune was thirsty for a minute.
  • Lily- Had a relationship with the Governor.
  • Sasha - Had a relationship with Bob, Gareth called her pretty, this Spencer guy is showing obvious interest in her, and if the comic is being followed and Sasha really is Andrea, he's gonna be pursuing her.
  • Michonne - Nothing. No one. All we know is that she had a boyfriend who died smoking weed, and got their kid killed in the process.

Arguably Rick staring at her retreating ass could count as attraction but it's straight-up fetishization at this point and negated by his actions in that horror show that was episode “Forget”.

You can't sit there eye-fucking someone but when it comes down to it, run to the nearest white woman. What was all that oogling for then? So no, I wouldn't count that as real acknowledgement.

Though she has been acknowledged to be a Black bitch, a weapon with a weapon, and even worse things by the fandom who still like to circulate that picture of Michonne as a fucking dog and one of the writers/producers even retweeted.

When you really step back and break it down, it's just like damn......this.... is some real, focused hatred of a dark-skinned Black woman.

Michonne should have had her entrance moment at the party.  She should have walked through that door and turned heads.  She should have showed up with her hair in a cute style, her skin glowing, a flattering dress in a nice color (or other dressy pants outfit, because Danai can wear the hell out of some suits!), and a radiant smile.  If Michonne had arrived and looked stunning I wouldn’t have been as upset about Jessie (I’d still be upset, but at least they wouldn’t have downplayed Michonne to make another woman look better).
