Every single fucking part of this. My main critique is the lack of black women’s voices in this. We were essentially nonexistent except for the 10 minute Mammy and the Sapphire spots…

I think that the lack of Black women’s voices in this movie is like… so fucking meta that Peele probably didn’t even realize he did it. In trying to tell this story of interracial romance gone bad, a Black male writer and director totally skipped over Black women.

I saw that from the previews

my mother actually joked about this after she saw the movie: she said that the black men in the movie reflected black men in general who date white women and only tend to hang around black men and ignore black women when we warn them of insidious behavior and mistreatment when it comes to their white friends, etc. and then they and their kids end up in situations they wouldnt be in had they just LISTENED to black women in the first place.

Created by filmmaker and writer Tchaiko Omawale, Solace is a coming of age film that stars Hope Olaidé Wilson as Sole, an orphaned teen who is sent to live with her estranged grandmother (played by Lynn Whitfield). Sole faces many obstacles, both mentally and physically, as she deals with loss, longing, confusion, and identity. Solace is also a rare depiction of a black girl struggling with an eating disorder and self-harm.

So if we wanted to watch some French animation, what films would you suggest?

the Triplets of Belleville is about an elderly woman searching for her son who was kidnapped in the middle of a Tour de France race. It’s largely free of dialogue, but the sound effects and such are wonderful. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature—it lost to Finding Nemo.

A Cat in Paris is about a young girl and her cat who discover mysteries in the course of one night. It was also nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Feature, but it lost to Rango.

Persepolis is based on an autobiographical graphic novel by Marjane Satrapi about her early life in Iran. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, but it lost to Ratatouille.

the Illusionist is about an aging magician and an imaginative young girl who form a father/daughter relationship. It was also nominated for a Best Animation Oscar, but lost to Toy Story 3.

The Rabbi’s Cat is a story about a cat who swallows a parrot and gains the ability to speak like a human. It is set in 1920’s Algeria.

Ernest & Celestine is the adorable story about a big bear and a little mouse who forge an unlikely friendship. It was also nominated for an Oscar in Best Animated Picture, but lost to Frozen.

Kirikou and the Sorceress is a story inspired by West African folklore that tells the story of Kirikou, a boy who was born with the ability to walk and talk, who saves his people from an evil witch. The film was popular enough to spawn sequels and a stage adaptation.

A Monster in Paris is a 3D animated musical film that is reaaaaalllly loosely based on the Phantom of the Opera. It’s set in 1910 and is about, surprisingly, a monster that lives in Paris, and his love for a young singer.

The King and the Mockingbird is an 80’s film about a cruel king titled Charles V + III = VIII + VIII = XVI, who is obsessed with a young shepherdess, and whose attempts to capture the young girl are thwarted by a mockingbird whose wife the King had previously killed.

Those are probably the most famous of the feature length animated films.

But the animated short films are just as glorious. Here’s a compilation of a bunch of short films and I can link you to others as well.

Sorry for the long answer but I just really love French animation.

Reblogging over here. French animation tends to do better with diversity than Disney does, hahaha.

I have seen The Rabbi’s Cat, a Monster In Paris, and A Cat in Paris and enjoyed all of them! (They are, or were, all on either Amazon Prime or Netflix.)

Yes, that is Chris Evans and Tilda Swinton. No joke!

It’s a still from Snowpiercera post-apocalyptic film where a failed attempt to save the earth from global warming has resulted in a new Ice Age. The only survivors are aboard a train, Snowpiercer, that travels indefinitely. A distinct class system forms among the passengers, resulting in a revolt by the lower class at the back of the train upon the outnumbered elite at the front. The film also stars John Hurt, Ed Harris, Octavia Spencer and Jaimie Bell.

Despite the film being mostly English-speaking and having a recognizable and solid cast of American and British actors, as well as Korean actors, the film has yet to be released in the US, the UK and other English-speaking countries.

The Weinstein Company continues to insist on cutting 25 minutes from this astonishing film by Korea’s acclaimed director, Bong Joon-ho. Most who were involved in the making of this film, especially the director, feel that cutting 25 minutes from Snowpiercer (in addition to adding voiceovers) will negate necessary character development and backstory, rendering it no more than a cool action movie rather than a daring, unique drama fundamentally about the pitfalls of classism.

Why the cuts and voiceovers? Why not just stick with the director’s vision? Because reportedly Harvey Weinstein doesn’t feel Americans capable and/or willing to give a film like this a chance in its true form. Reportedly he feels most of us, particularly those in the Midwest, just won’t get it. Therefore, The Weinstein Company won’t make as much money on it as they would if it were more palatable to the ignorant American masses.

It has also been reported that because The Weinstein Company holds distribution rights in the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa as well as the US, they will also not get the film in its intended form by default.

Bong Joon-ho, resisting Harvey Weinstein’s demands, feels Americans will understand it. The film has already been released with great financial and critical success in Korea and France and has upcoming releases in Japan, Sweden and Germany. It has won several awards at various international film festivals particularly in direction, design and cinematography.

Until Harvey Weinstein and Bong Joon-ho can come to an agreement the film will remain out of the reach of English-speaking countries…all because a rich CEO doesn’t think he’ll maximize on profits if he lets Americans think for themselves. Meanwhile The Weinstein Company has reportedly actively blocked any attempts by anyone to show this film in the United States and their other distribution territories listed above.

I refuse to be insulted as such just as I refuse to have anyone, let alone someone apparently consumed with greed, dictate to me what I can and cannot watch in my own language.

Stand up for your rights as a film-goer! Let’s fight for the director’s cut and release of Snowpiercer. Not only will this brilliant film finally be freed, but it may set a precedent for future foreign films as well.

The Daughter of Dawn, an 80-minute feature film, was shot in July of 1920 in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge near Lawton, southwest Oklahoma. It was unique in the annals of silent film (or talkies, for that matter) for having a cast of 300 Comanches and Kiowas who brought their own clothes, horses, tipis, everyday props and who told their story without a single reference to the United States Cavalry. It was a love story, a four-person star-crossed romance that ends with the two main characters together happily ever after. There are two buffalo hunt sequences with actual herds of buffalo being chased down by hunters on bareback just as they had done on the Plains 50 years earlier.
The male lead was played by White Parker; another featured female role was played by Wanada Parker. They were the son and daughter of the powerful Comanche chief Quanah Parker, the last of the free Plains Quahadi Comanche warriors. He never lost a battle to United States forces, but, his people sick and starving, he surrendered at Fort Sill in 1875. Quanah was the son of Comanche chief Peta Nocona and Cynthia Ann Parker, the daughter of Euro-American settlers who had grown up in the tribe after she was kidnapped as a child by the Comanches who killed her parents. She was the model for Stands With a Fist in Dances with Wolves.

You can watch the first ten minutes of the film here. It is over 90 years old, and was produced by, directed by, and stars Native American people.

NC: Just curious, Admin C why don't you like the documentary "Dark Girls"? i haven't seen it yet but you're the first person i've seen say they didn't like it.

Believe me, there are many people who found fault in the documentary.

[This excellent review really sums up the problems I had with the film, but I’ll also tell you myself. Seriously, if you have twenty minutes, listen to what this young woman has to say.]
