New to witchcraft? Awesome! Here's some things you should pursue.
  • An understanding of sympathetic magic: Correspondences, their metaphysical and theoretical framework, and their derivation.
  • Magical systems that incorporate the entire gender spectrum.
  • Energy work that isn't based on visualization.
  • The means of manifestation: How, where, and when spells affect physical change. The physical mechanisms through which witchcraft manifests beyond just willpower/intent/wishes/etc.
  • The history and subsequent influences of, and on, popular contemporary practices like Hermeticism, "Ceremonial Magick"/Golden Dawn, Wicca, and New Age/New Thought/LOA/Reiki.
  • How to approach and practice magic with critical thinking skills.
  • Influence of consumerism on contemporary practices.
  • Divination as systems: all methods of divination beyond tarot, their statistical applications, and their different methods of use.
  • The anthropology of medieval Arabia, Europe, Near East, and Asia relative to the magical or occult publications of the era. What is purely religious, parareligious, or syncretist and what does that mean for the interpretation of the text?
  • The genuine limits of our knowledge of the ancient world, what's possible for us to know and what can't we know?
  • Conversations with practitioners of closed or semi-closed practices and perspectives of POC when it comes to what the western world would label as "witchcraft".
  • The differences and similarities between superstition and the practice of witchcraft.
  • An understanding of the influence of colonialism on modern witchcraft and the language used to discuss magic.
  • Critical Race Theory (CRT), Queer Theory, and systems of oppression.
  • Botany and herbology: An understanding of the physical and medical properties of plants.
  • Building a personal lexicon for modern and/or colloquial terms used in and by the witchcraft community to describe and discuss practices.
  • Spell design: What makes a spell a spell? What is the smallest or slightest action that can be considered a spell and why? What are the most important and influential elements of the design and application of a spell?
  • Altars: Their use, design, and potential; whether or not an altar would benefit your practice or goals for practice.
  • A critical approach to spirit work and astral projection, being able to discern between personal narratives and probable experiences.
  • A safe and solid community to become a part of. One that does not allow the influence of personal narratives (Without addressing them as such), doesn't allow for the mixing of adults and minors, and with established and enforced logical and reasonable rules.
  • Collect and cross-reference correspondences from as many sources as possible, then start to create your own.
  • Try to find a STEM subject that interests you and study it through any non-dogmatic avenues available to you.

The items highlighted in blue are things I highly recommend!

Here is a list of things to avoid.

This is, of course, not an end-all-be-all list of possible responsible and healthy pursuits.

Great list!

Also look into cult behavior because a coven or society you’re interested in joining could be more dangerous than you think.

The Hermit

Lonely is a word that people fear in their life.

Having no one around and no one to talk to.

But, what is wrong with being alone?

Why do we fear the silence and calm

that comes from being by yourself?

We need to take the chance to look

deep into our soul and conscious.

Without the distraction of the world around,

you can learn a whole lot about you.

This is an opportunity to get in touch

with your higher self and what they need

you to learn from them.

There’s no fear in being alone.

You are your own best friend,

the one who knows you the best in life.

You should be your first and last love.

Why not spend quality time with you?

Center yourself around the values and ideas

that you hold true to your heart or soul.

Treat yourself like a friend and give

yourself the attention you crave and need.

Your higher self will teach you that you

don’t need to be on the move constantly.

Sometimes, it’s best to not move and

interact with anyone around you.

When it’s time to emerge back into

the present, and join society.

You’ll be prepared for anything and

phased by nothing,

that this world can throw at you.

🌿🚫🏞️ A Beginner's Guide: What Shouldn't Be In Nature 🏞️🚫🌿

Hey beginner witches! When practicing your craft in nature, it's important to be mindful of the impact you have on the environment. Here are a few things to avoid leaving in nature:

  1. Glass: Glass doesn't biodegrade and can pose a danger to wildlife if broken. Pack out any glass containers or bottles you bring with you and dispose of them properly.
  2. Plastic: Plastic pollution is a major problem for the environment, so try to minimize your use of plastic and avoid leaving any plastic items behind in nature. Opt for reusable or biodegradable alternatives whenever possible.
  3. Salt: While salt can be a useful tool in witchcraft, it's harmful to plants and can disrupt the delicate balance of ecosystems if scattered indiscriminately. Use salt sparingly and avoid leaving large amounts of it in natural areas.
  4. Non-Biodegradable Offerings: Be mindful of the offerings you leave in nature and choose items that are biodegradable and won't harm wildlife. Avoid leaving behind items like plastic toys, balloons, or food wrappers.

Let's practice responsible stewardship of the earth and leave no trace of our magical workings behind. 🌿🚫🏞️

When you start practicing, you’re going to be tempted to bury a lot of shit or throw it into a body of water…

Don’t. If it’s anything on this list, then just don’t.

🤍a simple personal cleansing spell 🤍🎧

Feeling a bit weighed down by negative vibes lately? It's time to treat yourself to a personal cleansing spell that'll leave you feeling refreshed and renewed from the inside out. Here's a gentle ritual to get you started:

🌸 Set the Scene: Find a quiet, peaceful space where you can be alone with your thoughts. Light a candle or some incense to create a soothing atmosphere. Take a few deep breaths to center yourself and let go of any tension.

🔮 Connect with Your Intentions: Close your eyes and focus on what you want to release from your life—whether it's stress, self-doubt, or anything else holding you back. Visualize these negative energies as dark clouds surrounding you.

Embrace the Power of Water: Fill a bowl with warm water and add a handful of sea salt or a few drops of your favorite cleansing essential oil. This mixture symbolizes purification and renewal.

🌊 Cleanse Away Negativity: Dip your fingertips into the water and gently splash it over your face, allowing the purifying energy to wash away any negativity or stagnant energy. As you do this, repeat a simple affirmation like, "I release what no longer serves me and welcome in positivity and light."

🌿 Ground and Reconnect: After cleansing, take a moment to ground yourself by placing your hands on the earth or simply feeling the support of the ground beneath you. Visualize roots growing from your feet, anchoring you firmly to the earth's energy.

❤️ Seal in Positivity: Finish your ritual by anointing yourself with a few drops of cleansing oil or moisturizer, focusing on areas like your wrists, temples, and heart. As you do this, affirm your commitment to self-love and inner peace.

💫 Express Gratitude: Take a moment to thank yourself for taking the time to nurture your mind, body, and spirit. Feel gratitude for the cleansing energy that now surrounds you.

Remember, personal cleansing spells are all about honoring your own journey and intuition. Trust yourself and let the magic flow! 💖🔮

pine trees and witchcraft

as winter months (and yule festivities) approach, pine becomes an excellent component of green witchcraft. evergreen trees, of course, symbolize immortality and perseverance. they are a great addition to any spell involving resilience or overcoming obstacles.

hanging a pine branch above your door will invite good energies, be it spirits or friends, into your space. placing pine above your bed will ward off illness.

throw pine into the fireplace (or bonfire) to summon protective energy.

pinecones work as a health and fertility charm.

pine is also an excellent smoke cleanser for purifying and warming a space’s energy.

pine trees in general are associated with divine harmony, peace, releasing guilt, and clarity. for this reason, meditation under a pine tree (or with a pine sprig in your hand) can be very healing and beneficial spiritually.

whether you have a pine tree in your home this season, you take a walk among some evergreens, or even just light a pine-scented candle in your bedroom, its wintery magick is wonderful.

Pine is such an excellent plant to use for protection and attracting abundance. It’s one of my favorites.

“Spirits Are Just Folks”

My most basic advice on any part of spirit work is encompassed by something my first teacher said to me that I have since built my whole practice on, any one who has been around here a while may have heard me say it before: ‘Spirits are just folks.” This doesn’t mean they are human, never forget that they aren’t human, but it does mean that you should expect interacting with them to follow some of the same general rules interacting with a person follows. For instance: You don’t meet a new person and expect to know absolutely everything about them and trust them implicitly after getting coffee one time, don’t expect to know everything about a spirit and trust them implicitly after one divination session. If you would usually take several hangouts over several months to come to trust a person and call them your friend, give yourself and a new spirit the same latitude. You wouldn’t expect a human friend to only want what you want, and consider them dangerous for having wants and desires, of their own, but many people think that a spirit is dangerous if they have their own motivations separate from the human they work with.

The entire basis of my practice is treating spirits as individuals. I occasionally do contract work for the big name entities from the big pantheons, but I worship an unrecorded pantheon and outside of them my longest and closest relationships are with a Clan of the Fair Folk and small local spirits. I’ve never been very concerned with pinning a recorded name or “type” on an entity I’ve encountered. To me an entity is fully vetted when I know them the way I know a friend: when I know their personality, their preferences, their desires, when I can anticipate their actions in response to my own. I don’t care if the entity who showed up claiming to be Apollo really is Apollo, I care about knowing the entity as an individual. If it isn’t who it claimed to be I hope to make it feel comfortable enough with me to drop it’s pretext and be truly itself.

Now this is just my personal style. There are other methods and styles of spirit work that don’t care so much about the individuality of the entities that they engage with. They’re perfectly fine, and work out just as well for their practitioners, they just don’t sit well for me with how I was taught from a young age and how I have developed my practice since.

I think this is why I find ritual work so..... uncomfortable and stilted..... because while I do have reverence for the Otherworld (thus making offerings regularly) I would be SO EMBARRASSED AND UNCOMFORTABLE if everytime someone called me on the phone or invited me over they made a big grand flowery tadoo about it. This kind of interaction with the Otherworld only feels appropriate to me when the event matches the ceremony (like for a festival or many a personal dedication or AT MOST when you're asking for a REALLY BIG FAVOR like the kind of favor that you could never make an equivalent offering to so all the extra reverence is PART of what offering you can make for it)
