You know what I love? Commonly forgotten mythology creatures from all around the world.
I love ghosts, vampires and werewolves as much as the next person, but where’s my epic adventure and romance stories about encantados, curupiras or hulders?
Why there is not as many selkie stories as there’s for mermaids?
Why there is so many Cerberus-inspired hellhounds when you can use cadejos?
If you are going to write a vampire story, why not break the mold a little and use the shtriga or the Jiang Shi, or at least make a reference about their existence?
If the fantasy fauna of your world has dragons, unicorns, griffins and the like, why then not include the sheer awesomeness that is the Simurgh? Where are my alicantos, my kelpies, my skvaders?
There is just so much interesting mythology that never gets used for anything, and that makes me sad.
Agreed.
